Amazon.com opens in Cape Town

I suppose they don't want to start running a centre in SA which distributes for a cheaper cost? Until the cost is less than R100 I'll stick to loot, kalahari and co with their R30 delivery thank-you-very-much.

I know one UK based software developing company that opened their development centre in JHB.
Surely, spending rands are cheper than spending pounds. :/

Cheap labour.... Motorola SA did the same thing here with regards to their cellular phone division and I don't think people should earn peanuts for doing good work!

But as long as people are willing to work for what they get paid it’s good. You cannot say that creating jobs is a bad thing? I don’t think pay is as important as good working conditions and fair working hours. And besides only monkeys work for peanuts. That is why there is something like minimal wage? Just my opinion.

i wouldn't mind being head-hunted by amazon :)
i'm sure they're just here for the weather and the beach and not for the cheap labour...

Please open locally- we need a proper online shopping experience

Please do not just develop software only and open up here. I cannot wait! I have never ordered a DVD from them overseas where after 3 weeks they came back and said that they do not have stock, unlike the poor excuse for an online store Kalahari. Everytime they shipped the next day! Even their slow deliveries from overseas beat Kalahari's normal delivery times and they had to contend with customs people. Wow,maybe at last we will have a pleasurable online shopping experience.

Couldn't agree more Ernstn.

Our online e-tailers take so bloody long!

For example I ordered Battlefield 2 from Take2 and they said "5-7" working days - took more like 11

In the UK or US it would have taken about 3-4 days (this on cheap shipping) while at least they have an OPTION to have next-day delivery.
