Amazon Fire TV available at Takealot

Bought one for "testing" purposes a while back. Superb little device. Amazon Instant Video has become my preferred media source for testing purposes over Netflix and Hulu. Just a pity about the poor XBMC compatibility without rooting, and the latest update causes havoc with rooting and launching XBMC as well.

XBMC can be sideloaded and then with some fancy footwork can be launched from the home screen:

Yeah got it sideloaded, but the device won't root after it updated the firmware and I can't auto-launch. Don't really want to in any case as I only really use Amazon, Netflix, and Hulu. XBMC/Kodi lost out when their Netflix and Hulu apps stopped working and there's no Amazon Prime app that I've seen recently. So to avoid duplicating launchers I simply launch Kodi on the odd occasion that I need it from the settings menu.

Amazon really need to make the launcher menu customisable though.

I hear you but the guides I posted are not to auto launch on startup but launch from the home screen like all the standard apps. I think that's what you looking for?

True, but with Unotelly all/most services can be accessed and subscribed to. Also, I've been told (unconfirmed) that DSTV Now works on the box.

OK if dstv now works then that makes sense.

I used to access amazon prime with unotelly. Just wondered why they would sell it here then you are not supposed to be able to access the above here.

Does plex work?

It is, thank you. But since the latest update I actually need to reflash the device to the old firmware to make the changes and I can't be arsed right now. :D

And how is that relevant?

I get your point ...but I see Nerfherder's too :D They're selling something which offers services that aren't available here - seems a little odd :/

So if one had to buy one of these and use it without "the special tools" to circumvent those restrictions, what can you do with it "officially" in SA?

If you don't know how to use it properly then don't buy it. Takealot is just responding to a market need. Plenty people want things like the Roku, but don't wanna import. This way they get it from a local shop.

I'm not interested in buying it and have no need for it. Watch my Netflix, Hulu and Plex on other devices. Was just asking a question on what you're supposed to do with it "officially" in SA...

I see quite a few punters going for it assuming that all the services will be available.

But then again...the first few lines in the description make it clear that the services are region dpecific

How is the average Joe supposed to know that ?

I can see a disclaimer popping up on that page pretty soon
