Hi
I recently purchased a fire TV gen 2 from an importer. Only when I read the fine print did I realise the whereas the fire stick can play primevideo pretty much unrestricted in SA, the fire TV is locked down for use in only a few major markets i.e. the states, UK, germany etc. Try as I may, with a multitude of VPN services tried, I cannot get the fire TV to play Amazon content. I've changed my Amazon account to a UK account and I've tried several UK VPN services and I still get the 5505 error code whenever I try to play content. Oddly, I can play any content from my phone using the primevideo app despite my phone not running on the VPN i.e. being g located in SA but accessing a UK Amazon account. The problem also extends to trying to access the BBC iPlayer , which also won't play content. I can, however, get all other UK services working i.e. ITV hub, All 4, TV player, sky News etc.
So I have some questions
1. Should I try and install the VPN on my router and not on the fire TV ?
2. Could the issue be that my fire TV is of USA stock, it has a US plug and it's been locked down as a US device by amazon ?

Any other ideas ?

I use Getflix dns settings in my router and my fire stick accesses all of the free U.K. channels including BBC iPlayer. I actually watched Live at the Apollo tonight on it.

Amazon do have some geo location parameters you have to be aware of though. For example, I did have a problem with my account last year when I was working in the U.K. and I bought a fire stick for use there, while my family still used the one located at home in Hermanus. I signed up for but couldn’t access the Amazon Prime stuff in the U.K. because my account was locked to SA where I had registered my original account under my email address. So I called Amazon (they had a number I found on their website) and explained my situation. The lady made my U.K. located stick a U.K. account and left the SA one which cannot legally access Prime content, still in SA.

So basically I could watch Prime stuff on my stick located in the U.K, and even though it was the same account, I couldn’t watch the same Prime content on the stick located in SA.

So you’ll need some account with U.K. address etc and a geo location service such as Getflix if you want everything to work properly.

Hi I use smartdnsproxy and it works great I have the us 4k Kodi look alike Fire tv. I have the US plug with an adapter, it seems to be a vpn issue...I have a Amazon us account. you will probably have to setup as a us account.

Ok thanks - yep I have no issues doing this with the firestick its with the fire tv that the geolocation seems to lock me down....

ok thanks - did you need a US payment mechanism i.e. a US credit card, or do you make payment with a SA card and a US address

Ah, sorry man. I assumed it was a stick. Hopefully you got some information out of my experience though :p

Get a right DNS setup on the router and block access to the Google DNS IP's.
