Ambitious broadband plans for Gauteng

There seem to be regular announcements from various municipalities and provinces about their amazing low cost bandwidth plans - I know Cape Town had a similar scheme, Polokwane was supposed to implementing a wireless network and the City of Joburg also had some plan. Problem is, this has been going on for ages and I'd like to know exactly where to find this "free bandwidth for all" in any of these places. I think all they do in the end is hook up their own offices and a couple of public libraries and then proclaim that they are implementing an amazing public broadband scheme.

All I can see is that the fire-station in Silverton, the test-centre in Waltloo, and some other offices have been linked by fibre cables which they string on the lightpoles.

Haven't seen anything of their so-called amazing networks yet.

Think it's safe to call it vapourware.
