LOL... what?!

Johannesburg - South Africa’s three largest platinum producers are facing double digit wage demands for both the lowest paid employees and highly skilled workers.

The biggest union at the mines, the Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (Amcu), yesterday demanded a 47 percent pay increase for the the lowest paid workers in Anglo American Platinum, Impala Platinum and Lonmin.

The union said salaries for highly skilled workers should increase by 15 percent.

Amcu general secretary Jeff Mphahlele said the union wanted the lowest paid employees in the industry to be paid at least R12 500, instead of the average R9 000 per month they were currently getting.

Mphahlele said the union wanted a one-year wage deal.

He said talks with Impala were scheduled to start next week while negotiations with Lonmin and Anglo American would start later this month. “The implementation of the negotiations should be as of July 1, in case wage negotiations take longer than expected; a back payment will be made irrespective as to when the agreement has been reached,” Mphahlele said.

The big concern of course - is what the union are prepared to do in the name of negotiation.

0,1% growth for SA, poor FDI, high unemployment .... none of these bode well for us.

A few more strikes, a few more burnings - heaven forbid, another Marikana and we in deep doo.

Simple answer from the mining companies will be.. you want that increase, we will need to reduce staff complement by a corresponding figure.

These guys are f**king retarded. They obviously have zero comprehension of how the economy works. Bring on the mechanisation!

Well, we can offer so much. Accept it, and keep your employment, or reject it and with that you indicate that you are resigning. BYE BYE.
I say, you give like 10% a ridiclous increase like this, and the rest absolute crap. So you turn them against each other. They'll soon murder each other. If you don't like your pay, F**K OFF.

Yes, and I demand a bigger trouser snake. Not gonna happen.

Unions are nothing more than price fixing cartels. They get very upset is shops are involved in price fixing but it is pretty much the only thing unions do.

Very often they have no strategic foresight. Its all about getting as much as they can for today, F tomorrow...

Someone needs to asks the unions how they feel about business rigging prices. I am sure they will be all raged up and whatnot. Then hand them a mirror - because they are rigging the prices of labour.

Unions are the reason why big mining houses have sold their operations in SA and left.

When unions get paid fron workers wages then only will they stop their ****

That's the spirit, price yourselves out of the job market.

I wish something could be done about these economic terrorists.

No longer have access to affordable labour? Cut staff numbers and invest in more machinery.

YES, you tell the unions that on payday they can have their representatives go and stand at the gate and collect the unions fees from the workers. Now its basically paid by the mines. The workers probably don't even know it.
