The Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (Amcu) warned on Tuesday that should consultation fail, it would embark on industrial action at Impala Platinum [JSE:IMP] over looming job losses.

“We are not going to run to [the] labour court, we don’t have money... we will hit where it matters most...[the] gloves will be off,” Amcu president Joseph Mathunjwa said at a press conference in Sandton.

Implats will need to consult with trade unions as per section 189 of the Labour Relations Act (LRA) and the Department of Mineral Resources according to mining legislation, before going ahead with the plan to cut 13 000 jobs in the next two years.

Mathunjwa also warned of a secondary strike at Implats operations if the company brings “technical” issues to the negotiations over job losses.


"[We will] make sure there is no ounce of platinum that goes out of the ground,” Mathunjwa said, adding "you know we are capable of that, we are not bluffing."

Amcu led a five month wage strike in 2014 in the platinum sector, which impacted economic growth and the entire Rustenburg region.
 
Why do unions call these things "talks" or "negotiations" when it is always the union's way or the highway? That's not an engagement, it is a meeting where you are extorted and the only thing on the table is how much they can take you for.

Agreed. But don't forget the people who "voted" for these unions and support them. Dumb and dumber.
 
What they need, is a live counter, starting at 13 000, of jobs that need to be cut in order to keep the company going. The number increases as long as the strike is going on.

Implats should close shop. Have everyone unemployed. Then after 2 years start again from fresh. Teach these stupid Unions a lesson.

I have plenty of friends there. Would be the straw that broke their back. Plenty here in town that still battle to recover from that huge strike. You can never recover from such a loss.

There will be casualties unfortunately. But it needs to be done. I'm so very happy I'm not in the mining sector. Even though I almost ended up there. I worked at AMPLATS refinery in Waterfal many years ago. Just before the platinum explosion. Rustenburg was still a town and not a city. I have regretted leaving for a long time. But seeing shyte like this makes me glad I never stayed on in the mining sector.

That is the problem...

There are innocent bystanders, but the Unions WILL drive these companies into bankruptcy...

Implats need to shed 13000 jobs to keep the remainder employed for the future, but the Unions want all to be employed except it will drive the company to shut up shop.

You have friends that work in mining? interesting.
 
Crippling the mines, putting thousands out of work but like one myBB says he appreciates those who went on strike and lost their wages paving the way for a better life for him.

Maybe this will all be worthwhile and future workers will have improved working conditions and pay - at least that's the idea.
