Amd 965 price drop :)

woah thats cheap. thats the same price the 945 was going for last week
 
These guys have now dropped almost R1K in almost 2 months. :)
Question is, can the 965 go beyond 4GHz where the 955 cannot?
 
how would this CPU fair against the i7/i5?
 
Is this price unique to them or will the likes of nivo etc also adjust their prices?

No, average OC is 3.8, 3.9 stable if you're lucky, and 4 if you're extremely lucky, ..since it's the same die as the 945/955.
 
I think it would fair OKish against the i5, but it should never be compared to the i7. Actually probably not even to the i5. AMD need a architecture update. The rapid price drops are really there to keep it selling against the likes of the i5, IMHO. The 955 barely budged in pricing prior to the arrival of the i5. After that it has been dropping semi-rapidly.

The saving grace for AMD is the motherboard offerings. You get better onboard GPUs if that's what you need. They do come short in the southbridge offerings sometimes (SATA port availability and RAID speeds compared to the ich10 and ich10r from Intel), but for entry level stuff you get better offerings when going AMD. Intel GMA sux.

As for the overclock; yip, still the same 955 die with a slightly higher clock which is unfortunate as I thought they'd be offering the 965 with a better die which could send it to 4GHz, but seems overclock is dead on with the 955.
 
Phenoms are not going after i5 they are still going after intel's old tech sadly. i5 is the best bang for buck setup at the moment without a doubt.
 
Because unfortunately with these CPUs being out on the market the inevitable comparison in that price bracket is going to happen.
 
Don't know why you guys are saying you can't compare the phenom2s with an i7. It was already established long ago that the 955 performs on the level of the i7 920. Obviously the 965 performs better and for that price it's amazing.

As for over clocking amd already has a 125watt version of the 965 that overclocks better.
