Hi I am in need of a AMD AM2+ motherboard, does any one have to sell, needs to support a 9850 black 125 watt cpu. I stay in Port Elizabeth will pay for the courier. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

thanks in advance

Wait for someone to correct me on this, but doesn't AM3 support older AM too?

Nope, AM3 CPU on an AM2 board, not other way around. AM3 boards requires DDR3, that won't work with AM2 cpu....also waiting to be corrected
In other words, CPU is backward compatible, motherboards not

Correct.

9850 black will not work in a AM3(+) MB.

Are you sure. Getting new AM3+ sabertooth DDR 3 motherboard and it supports AM processors on the CPU support list.
There are Bottleneck warnings written everywhere. Cpu only supports up to DDR 2 speed.

Probably not impossible that a board manufacturer can build one with the right firmware etc. that support older cpu, but the norm says otherwise.

What motherboard (make & model) have you ordered ?

Best bet is to create a [Wanted] thread on carbonite then.
www.carbonite.co.za

I see so few AM3 mobos on there so no idea how hard it's gonna be to find a AM2+ one.
Or if it's even gonna be worthwhile.

From what I've seen it benches around 3000 on passmark.
A total which some of those cheaper Intel duo cores can beat.

What kind of budget you looking at to spend on the board?

Well let me give you some info on what the board is doing, The pc will switch on< Ill be able to go into the bios and try boot up, seems as the board hits a certain temp it freezes the system, and when i press reset I get a black screen hard drive light on constantly, no hard drive activity tho, and dvd rom starts to flash, it will refuse to come on. If i then switch the pc off for a few min, it will switch on, but again same result. I am assuming due to the power issues we have in this country of late it messed up a cap on the board. I have a MSI K9A2 Platinum

As it takes a time before is able to come back, possibly thermal issue.
Check if FAN is running, refresh thermal paste.

Either locate one second-hand through Gumtree, the newspaper classifieds or Carbonite, or pony up for a new platform with DDR3 memory. You're not going to get a lot of luck finding a good, functional socket AM2+ board.

That Sabertooth will not support any AM2+ chips. The memory controller is on the chip itself and the Sabertooth only has the correct notches and board traces to support DDR3 DIMMs. AM3 chips will be fine, but AM2+ is a no-go.

Bad caps is the first thing that comes to mind. What PSU do you have and how old is it?

I have a corsair TX 750 watt psu it is about 4 years old.

At what temp on what sensor does it switch off?

i wa able to go into the bios before it froze on me, cpu was at about 40 & system only at 34, the cpu fan however was doing about 5500 rpm i could hear it speeding up while i was sitting in the bios.

Decent PSU, probably isn't the main issue here.

That is what the board looks like, it has heat pipping, I thought perhaps that is what is causing the problem, its overheating

Now that I've been reminded on what the board looks like, I'm almost certain you're suffering from a VRM or capacitor failure. If I'm remembering this correctly, that board and others like it in MSI's lineup were all using Nichicon capacitors, famous for catching fire at random without warning.

I don't think you're going to win this fight.

Doesn't seem to be related to temperature then.
