AMD is losing the "X" prefix of its ATI graphics lineup, and slapping on "HD" to denote the changes and advancements in its R600-based DirectX 10 cards. Up top is the Radeon HD 2900 XT (the rumors were close), with 320 stream processors, double that of the GeForce 8800 GTX from NVIDIA. The lower-end RV630- and RV610-based cards will go as the HD 2600 Pro / XT and the HD 2400 Pro / XT. HD on all these cards denotes the Avivo HD technology on board for decoding H.264 and VC-1 video off of Blu-ray and HD DVD discs. The 2900 series also has full HDMI outs, with integrated 5.1 surround sound. No exact launch date or pricing yet, but we shouldn't have too much longer to wait.

Why would nvidia be screwed?? Ati/AMD is 6 months late. It would be a shock if Ati's dx10 card didn't beat the gf8800. But I will wait to see benchmarks before making any judgements.

And I am pretty sure that Nvidia has been working hard on gf 8900 while Ati has been struggling to get their first dx10 part out.
 
Well I'll still be interested to see what their mid range is like, and I hope they realise that they have to launch itatthe sam time as their top end cards.

But I agree than ATI are very late... again. They won't be able to capture most of the market which has already bought 88xx series cards.
 
Gamers are upgrade freaks. They'll upgrade their cards even for a 5% frame-rate increase, and some marketing BS (HD, AVIVO, etc).

Sure it can decode BD, but a BD drive still sells for R6000 which
is what this card will cost anyway too. By the time BD is popular
and cheap (and has a significant line up) plus 30 inch monitors
are mainstream, you'll see the entrance level cards sporting
VC-1 decoding (we've seen MPEG2 accelleration in Geforce 1 cards)
for a small fraction of the price of these early-adopter models.

Nothing yet on pricing but it seems ati's midrange cards will also be 128bit which again is a let down.:(

And yes gamers do upgrade allot but they don't just update. They may go with ati if their vista drivers for r600 is better than nv's drivers.

AVIVO an PureVideo are not marketing BS. Those two GPU based video accelerators\decoders outclass $10,000 NAD, Yamaha and H/K units in DVD and HD content playback.

Also MPEG-2 acceleration was already in the TNT2 not GF1.
Larger screen sizes do not become the norm in a linear fashion. A 30" is not practical for most desks etc... So it can't eventually be the standard unless people sitting further back from their monitors becomes a standard.
AVIVO is also not about BD only , its all HD content, it is not dependent on the price of a BD player in South Africa.
 
i dont think Ati cards are late, there is nothing that uses dx 10 so whats the point of having a card, i bought one just because i could and its blows away all 7xxx cards

They are late. If your competition releases a product 6 months ahead of you, then you are late.

?? Were are these benchmarks which proves them out performing nvidia. And AMDATI would be in serious trouble if their chip didn't out perform G80 consider how much latter it was released.

Late is when your competition releases a chip 6 months before you do. Many hardware enthusiasts upgrade their gfx cards every 6 months. That makes AtiAmd a whole cycle behind Nvidia.

The R600 would have to smash the G80 for it to be worth the wait.

My question is ... will ATi FINNALY have linux drivers?
 
why would they?

linux cant run most games, they cannot run dx 10 games so why bother with a driver :)

late would be not releasing a card for a dx 10 game, thats late

just because the nvidia has a card does not mean ppl wont buy the ati card

Because you can do more with your linux desktop than your windows ones (ie. XGL and co), also, there are thousands of games that have been ported to linux, and a lot of games come out with a Linux native version (Unreal Tournament and such).

Nvidia makes linux drivers.

You can run most windows games on linux (just things like bf2 on SGS servers with punk buster... has issues).

DirectX is MS`s way of controlling the desktop market. If linux could game like windows... it would be end game for MS.

ATI has never released an Nvidia card or chipset - so why the comparison? Releasing chips at the drop of a hat has been what Nvidia is about - just like releasing OS's is what M$ is about. It doesn't add up to a better deal or product.
