Ok so i reckon i will buy amd as i wanna support them, so i buy an entry level mobo which is around the same price as a g31 mobo.

So i checked the g31 mobo has 4 sata ports and 2 pci ports, stupidly i think cool amd value for money cheaper and better mobo's than intel, so i put an order in for the amd mobo.

Granted i never checked for sata ports and pci ports i just assumed surely they must have 4 sata and 2 pci because people say amd's mobo's are more feature packed for less money.

Arrives today with 2 sata ports and 1 pci, HTF is AMD better value than intel i am asking myself if mobo's that cost the have same have less features :(

Bloody crazy, on the up side the amd cpu runs like a bomb i will give it that.

think it is because AMD cpu's are generally cheaper!
but if I could, I would switch to Intel any day!

depends on the board, generally the low end AMD boards tend to have a better onboard graphics which can play games. Also their CPU fans are quiet - why people stick with Intel's noise makers is beyond me

Why are you generalising on AMD boards like that? You made a wrong choice of board. Should always read the spec rather than buying a board based on reading info on another. It's like going out and reading the spec sheet for a BMW and thinking "damn, Merc must be the same" and wind up being so surprised when the Merc arrives.

Welcome to the world of never assuming things.

i have had some darn ****ty intel and amd m/bes; still preference is intel + nvidia.

Yup what i have learnt is never assume AMD mobo's are more or the same feature packed than intel's always read up and make sure when you check an intel with this or that and make sure the amd for the same money offers something as well speced.

Like i said though the cpu is running sweet and i must admit the silence is rather nice. I will in future never think amd offer a better mobo or at least the same specs as an intel mobo for the same money. As you say Porsche vs BMW 2 very different things, at least it has a good engine which both porsche and bmw's do :D, just the body work sucks.

So on not reading up i fully agree with you, had i read up i would have opted for a better featured intel board for the same money which is why i am surprised. Anyways not serious will just buy a better mobo for it which i should have just done in the first place i guess in a couple months when i got 800 bucks spare.

The feature set depends on the chipset manufacturer and the board manufacturer and not AMD or Intel, unless AMD or Intel made the chipset and board.

You'll also find that some brands charge more for just their name. So coin-for-coin comparisons sometimes never work out.

It's all open to interpretation. I was after a Gigabyte motherboard recently featuring the AMD 790GX chipset. It had 6 internal SATA connectors. Rectron don't offer it in this country. Next option was Asus motherboard. Buggers... 5 internal SATA and 1 external eSATA. It'll have to do.

Yea i bought an ASUS, never again though. Guess i am just annoyed a new mobo only comes with 2 sata ports and i bought a damn sata dvd writer hahahaha. It is all my fault though because i should have checked the specs but ya you live and learn.

Will just a buy an ide writer  and pop my 1tb in, much more relaxed now though.

:D Which board was that?
Can't you return it? Some shops are quite helpful when it comes to a simple selection mistake.

This is the one i wanted but they said it was end of life at frontosa and gave me this one so i thought well ok haha. Anyways not serious i guess just annoying that a 600 buck board has only 2 sata ports. I will start saving for the 955 when it drops in price and get a seriously good board for far cheaper than intel.

They sell the alternative for the same price?!?! Doesn't sound like they checked their spec. Looks like you picked the right board. Fault is with the shop for making the recommendation.

Yes, I'm waiting for 955 to drop as well. Not sure how long I can wait. :) Price dropped around R40 when the 965 showed up on price lists. Will see where it's at come month end.

FWIW, those boards are ***.

Some of the worst boards I had were Intel + Nvidia.

You should be able to pick up a nicely feature-pack AMD board for about R800.
:/

Anyway, I feel for you doob.

:(

To me it sounds like killadoob got a bit of the short end from that store.

Send it back. Reason, not nearly the same spec as the board you wanted. But yes, you should have checked.

Lol... I can imagine the unboxing scene of that! What you guys reckon is the best AM3 based board avaliable now under R2000? AMD are better value than Intel...most of the time. Especially the Phenom 2 x3 720BE!

The Q8200 is the same price as the 720 BE and beats it considerably at stock - http://www.cpubenchmark.net/common_cpus.html. The Q8xxx/also OC really well...

Intel G31 motherboards are also nice little OCers. Unfortunately AMD can't come close to the price/performance of a Q8200/G31 combo.

As for AMD mobos, well at least their mod-range boards are priced well. You could get the popular Asus M4A78 for a little under R1000.
