As the title states, what are my options amd wise for this price? Intel i think ill go for q8200 and p5k-1600 mobo......

I like the Gigabyte G31 motherboards, R500-R700 depending on the exact model. Basic but it does the job just fine.

This is one of those rare moments where intel is better than amd when it comes to price vs performance.

The only real amd cpu better than the Q8200 is one from the Phenom 2 series and they are at the 2k mark so not much money left over for a good mobo

/hides before being stoned by amd fan boys

Lol ok...I tried looking but couldn't really find an AMD solution that seemed reasonable enough in comparison with the intel in the price vs performance category. Then again my knowledge on amd cpu's is quite limited:o

BIOSTAR A770 A2G+ Motherboard R708.28

Amd socket AM3 Tripple-core 720 Phenom 2 x3 Black edition R1792.15

While the total is R2500.43 it would definitely outperform the Q8200 and you'll have 6 sata ports to play with.

Hell even with staying in budget this would outperform the Q8200:
Amd socket AM3 Tripple-core 710 Phenom 2x3 (2.6Ghz) R1603.71

Why do you say a tri core would out perform a quadcore?

does not seem like the 720 can even beat a q6600, yet you seem to say a tri core is better than a quadcore

Pity you don't have a slightly bigger budget because the 920 amd is nice :D
Stay clear of that 9750, those old amd phenoms well let's just say they got dominated by intel :D, also had some manufacturing fault if i recall.

Interesting the 940 is cheaper than 920 at iconic, i wonder how that works.

well killadoob is correct in what he says but @R1474 the 720BE does become a whole lot more competitive in terms of price/performance ration against the quads. Not to mention the 720BE is X920 with a core disabled, it is known for its great overclocking ability with very little effort that puts it far closer to the AMD quads. So if you want to beat the budget and still get pretty good performance I would reckon that 720BE at R1474 is a winner!

A 2.8 phenom2 beats a 2.33 core2quad. The q8200 just doesn't enough mhz or cache to compete.

I would go for the Asus P5PKL/1600 and an Intel Core 2 Duo. Maybe the E74/5/6/00. Depending on your budget.

Also you can overclock these little beasites quite nicely. ;)

That was the plan...but im trying to a least get a little more longevity out of the PC by going with a Quad...its a tricky choice. I'll end up OCing the quad as well...although I know it doesn't OC all that well.

Well, what do you want to use the PC for? If it's just for gaming, then go for the dual core. If it's for video encoding, any other multi threaded application (forgot what other uses off the top of my head lol :D ) then go for the quad core.

It for my GF and not me:D I already have a Q6600:p But it seems like games are moving more and more towards utilizing more cores and knowing her she won't upgrade for a loooong time to come. She does a bit of everything but I would guess gaming makes up the majority of that:)lol

I think the AMD tri-core is best , it has speed of a dual core for games and 3 cores for everything else - its the perfect middleman

Definitely get the tri-core!!!
