Amd or Intel(CPU&MB) for R2400

I think the AMD tri-core is best , it has speed of a dual core for games and 3 cores for everything else - its the perfect middleman

yeah, sure, but IF you just overclock the Q8200 to say 2.8ghz, which is embarrassingly easy to do, it would kick the AMD Phenom 2 720 BE in the mouth, even if you overclock the AMD to 3.8/3.7ghz, the quad may still come out on top (that tri-core amd at those clocks is only a little better then a 810 @ stock clocks). The tri-core does lose steam in many applications.

Hmmm....the benchies that killa posted seem to support that view....

yup, the q8200 pretty much performs the same as the q6600 (depending on the app, as some apps like more cache, but the q8200 uses the newer 45nm transistors and the architectural updates, so they are equal at the stock front).

If the AMD quad cores came down in price then intel would have a decent fight, but as it stands, getting a budget intel quad core is your best bet...
I have the q8200 and it's a very nice processor, i've clocked it to 2.8ghz (1600mhz fsb), so volts changed, nothing, just bumped up the fsb.

If you have to get an intel quad get at least a 9series. No point getting an 8series.

Sigh. The 720 really is the best option you know.

I want to believe you but I just don't see it:confused:(at least not in the benchies), do you have different info I can look at then...?

Nah, the quad is better than the tri core! If you want, you can get a secondhand Q9300 at a good price. Check prophecy forums classifieds. Aftaster is sellin one :p
