Is the Intel Core 2 duo ahead in the game at the moment? I need to upgrade my system to something fast with 2 Gigs of RAM for development work. I have mainly used the AMD chip-set in the past but will go with whichever is currently better.

Thanks,
Russell.

I think the 6750 is great value. You can pick them up for about R1850 from Prophecy.co.za. Its a dual core 2.67 ghz CPU. Easily overclockable to around 3.4 - 3.6ghz.

If money is a bit of a problem, the AMD 5600+ (2.8ghz dual core) can be bought from PC International for around R1350.

Both CPU's support DDRII 800Mhz RAM.

Also a decent AM2 board is way cheaper than the intel counterparts

the top end CPUs from Intel offer more processing power ;p

the AMD 6000+ which can be bought for around R1600 will out perform a stock E6420 but not the E6750. Depends on what you are spending ;)

im not sure intel have the lead in the gaming arena to be honest

with the new price decraese they do though because it puts quadcore and the e6750 within range of purchase now

dont buy amd at the moment

AMD better bring out Barcelona soon as they're sucking on Intel's boot right now.

Business is business though so as far as the better bang for buck goes Intel is the way to go for now.

Yeah, I used to be an AMD fanboy as well, but now they're just sucking a$$!

Guess I'm more like a price wh0r3 than a fanboy after all!

AMD has announced a 3.0 Ghz QuadCore CPU. I think it will be released in 2008 with support for 3 Graphics cards. Some ATI thing; Crossfire or something.

I suggest you go for Intel.

hmmm... thaty\ would be very cunning making a AMD CPU that is primarily linked to an ATI graphics card, and then they make it in a way that the cpu and gpu can share tasks to aid in performance. But when used with an intel CPU, It's not that great, but It's competition with Nvidia, But when coupled with an AMD CPU , It's gonna blow every one out the water, and I will be you, that that idea will simple rape, and every one will go for AMD/ATI

But For now, go with a simple Intel E6420... And a R1000 mobo, as you not Overclocking

scotty i doubt that man

dx already uses your cpu to take off load from your gpu, so amd are to late already

i got a feeling amd will go bust in the next 2 years

Then my second favourite CPU makers will be the only ones left.. chips will become like Telkom broadband, they'll probably just start selling P4's again as new "market related" prices.

Naah I don't think/hope they won't, they've got ATI now which apparntly pulled them through this rough patch.. too bad ATI had to go screw up their cards again. It all depends on AMD's new chips imo.

yea i hear you but its like porshe start selling their cars for the price of fiesta 1.4

every single car company would go bust, if you cannot offer quality and price you wont make it

AMD still has a chance if they can get it right. The only other problem that the consumers will have is that although the first few Phenom (Quads) will be AM2 compatible AMD will release AM3 (I think) motherboards in 2008. That means shelling out extra money. But the AM3's will support DDR3. I might be totally off about this but this is what I think.

A snipet:
One thing AMD apparently hasn't finalized yet is what platform Leo will use. Spider, on the other hand, should be compatible with AM2+ motherboards. AMD stated at one point that Phenom would be compatible with both AM2 and AM2+ motherboards, so no word yet on whether it has dropped support for the AM2 standard platform going forward. Also of interest is that neither of the two platforms will make use of DDR3. Apparently, AMD feels that DDR2 is good enough, and doesn't plan to transition to DDR3 until after 2008.

We'll just have to wait and see. I still suggest you go for Intel. They already have the tech, all they have to do now is work from that to make something better.

Unfortunately the ATI division is not pulling in enough to keep them afloat. At this point AMD's future rests on their next CPU line being a *ahem* "phenom"enal success or an investment company injecting a massive amount of capital. They only have a small window though as once Intel brings out Nehalem it may be game over.

Wonder if they can get google to fund it. Call it a Goonom or a PheGo. :/ I suck at life.
