AMD Phenom B3 Stepping Release

I'm not sure what point you are trying to make... AM2 motherboards are widely used and Phenom CPU's can run on AM2 motherboards.
i think killa is referring to the switch from Socket A to AM2. That was my main head ache with the new (back then) AMD cpu's, and I still have my single core 939 because of the whole motherboard replacement.

...but not for long :D already ordered my intel e8200 box. i might be an AMD fanboy, but i want some bang for buck as well please!

ah ok good point but I was referring to AM2 users, for those that actually do have them it's price wise, more sound to buy a AMD CPU Vs. Intel, at least up until a point.

u do have a point

see intel make money off chipsets so changing them alot will generate a ton of money for both chipset and cpu

like i sold my old 965 board because gigabyte said it would not support it

i then found out it did support them :( and man that board could overclock well

shame amd just cannot find a decent to compete with an intel :(

Very few people are looking for top end performance because of the cost. So it's only about 1-2% of people for which that will be a problem. From the posts in this forum, it seems to me like most people assume that the person asking the question is always looking for a top end product which is unfortunate as people will often go off and buy the Intel when it will end up costing them more.

rubbish this cpu will be more or less the same price as the q9300

your assuming the poster has an am2 mobo

your also assuming that intel's top products cost the same as amd's

intel's top quaddie will set you back a cool 10k
amd's will set you back 2.5/3k

now amds top quadcore can only just keep up when overclocked with intel's lowest quadcore thats my point

intel does not cost more than amd if you dont have an am2 mobo already

amd used to alot cheaper on cpu's but now there is not much difference in this country

maybe overseas but since i live in south africa i work on our pricing and if the poster is looking at the new amd he should also look at the new intel providing he is buying without an am2 mobo

Personally, I don't buy/test CPU's based on oc performance and changing timings and voltages on anything. For me, if I'm happy with performance and price on a brand I go for it. Most people using machines for work (which I think most people do besides us crazy ones) don't give a hoot about oc'ing a chip. Only us strange bunch of folks worry about performance on high end apps, even though we don't use that much cpu performance all day long.

My 2c

Dude, you Intel crazy, you have made a few valid points, but you biased too and don't give amd enough credit. i am an avid amd fan too, but i will give credit where its due.

besides we should actually compare the mid-range prices as that affects most ppl as they are using them. we are not all fortunate as you being a crazy intel fan.

for me they both on par, just like ati and geforce.

so lighten up dude
:D

actually i only used to buy amd before core 2

then core 2 came out and amd suddenly dropped their prices by half after i had payed 2.4k for a dual core 3800+which was then dropped to nearly half 2 months later while i saw the core 2's demolish amd in terms of performance

now that got me angry, they can suddenly drop pricing because they no longer offer the best cpu

then i tried intel and i loved it, it was so fast and to be able a cpu more than 200 mhz was insane

strange thing is im not biased towards intel at all, i have only owned an intel since core 2

i have been using amd since the duron's

for office use it does not matter which one you buy but if you like a nice fast pc and enjoy overclock than intel is a winner :)

There's no doubt that Intel offers the fastest CPUs right now across the range apart from the low end segment where celeron competes with the Athlon64.
There would be little sense in buying a high end AMD machine to be honest as you'll get better performance from an Intel system.
However if you want an affordable quad core system AMD will provide you with the cheapest option. Not useful for many people, but those who encode video regularly will appreciate the extra two cores on the Phenom X4s.

AMD's value argument does not work on their high end part like the 9850BE. every other place they have a winner of sorts, because 9550 will be much cheaper than any quad core Intel can produce and faster in multi-threaded apps than any dual core Intel chip.

Given the quality of the chipsets however that support AMD I would go Intel especially if you are into tinkering and what not.
