For me to upgrade to conroe it would mean buying:

1. New Motherboard (decent one will be about R2000)
2. New CPU (Let's say E6600 which should be about R3500, this BTW is an awesome chip)
3. New RAM (DDR2 costs about the same as DDR so let's say 2Gigs for R1600)

Total of about let's say R7000. To be fair if I wanted to upgrade to AM2 it would be about the same. Maybe a grand or two cheaper.

With the above setup I would use my existing G-card, a 6600GT.

What I have now:

AMD64 3800+ (939pin)
ASUS A8N32-SLI Deluxe
2Gig DDR

Now my question is this: What would perform better in gaming? The above "new" setup with my 6600GT, or my original setup with a 7950GX2 (which would cost about R7000)?

Even if I had cash to burn I would still wait before buying into conroe. Since they don't support SLI and have only limited support for crossfire.

you gonna have to upgrade that card sometime, you will never see the true power of conroe with a 6600GT

well as far as im concerned its about time intel stopped riding the wave of, ppl will buy from us because we are intel

now that they realize amd is a serious threat they have taken action

good for us bad for amd
but amd will bounce back and kick their ass like they have been doing for the last 2-3 years

on the conroe issue i doubt that dell would start using amd if conroe was so amazing

death to intel

Exactly. I play games, and in the end of the day my main concern is my GPU not my CPU. A 7950GX2 in my current setup will destroy any conroe setup that has a 6600GT..... take note: IN GAMING (before someone stinks up the place by crapping their pants  ).

I would rather take the cash and get a awesome G-card that'll push my gaming up than buy into conroe and be stuck with my 6600GT.

Please note that this is my personal situation at this time. If I had the cash to buy into Conroe and still get a top end G-card, I probably would. Right now I can only do one. And for me getting a 7900GTX at the end of August (which is what I'm planning), is a better and cheaper option than buying into Conroe.

1. I haven't seen any "Core 2 Duo" compatible motherboards yet on any local pricelists.

2. According to one of the big distibutors the price + standard dealer markup would put it at R2950 from 23 July.

3. AM2 is not an upgrade to be honest. You 'll get way more performance improvements from the Conroe. Rather wait for it.

could anybody supply a best guess estimate of the conroe range at retail prices in 3rd quater 2006.

Also it supports DDR2-800. How much will decent ram cost for 2GB?

I think that is a wise decision. You might like to wait for the 8 series though, due out in September.

am2 is not bad because of ddr 2

slight gains from that

toxin i would rather buy the standard 7900 gt
if you can afford the 5k for the gtx go for it but performance gain cant be much

DDR2 might be R100 more in some cases. But it'll be cheaper very soon.

September? Interesting, I thought it would be out later. I can definately wait an extra month for a DX10 compatible card. :)

Yeah, the performance gain isn't much to write about but the main reason for me getting the GTX is the improved cooling it has. I'm not too bothered about temps (tho the GTX actually runs cooler). I'm more interested in noise reduction. And the cooler on the GTX is much quieter.

Right, back on topic....... erm, what was the topic again? Oh yeah, AMD pricing drops........ Not going to help me since I just upgraded to my 3800+ two days ago.

Hehe yeah close enough. You gotta admit it's a very exciting time again for the budget to mid priced PC builder. I mean you have a +/- R3000 CPU that is beating a R10 000+ CPU in practically everything including power consumption. All that power and it's only rated at 65W! Sweetness :D

It's crazy!

We are the ones that are winning now. :) Can you imagine where we would be now if there only was one CPU provider?

Competition are cool. :)

I don't care what poeple say about AMD I have been a AMD fan since the first amd 700mhz processor launched in 1999 till now and then I'm lucky to own a 4000+ 64bit cpu still runs that latests games better then any other intel cpu that has 3.2ghz or less.

AMD is for games not office work why do you think intel stockmarket is larger than AMD's becuase they supply offices all over the world? and they advertise 24/7 365 day's a year. AMD doesn't even have to advertise , much and their sales are still good and anyone who play games knows that amd is better... the point is after this crap strory... AMD will always be better against intel with games!!!

thats the whole point isn't it?

DDR2-800 is about R1400 for 1Gb chips / R3000 for 2Gb Chips.
DDR2-667 is about R615-790 per 1GB chip.

Performance increase not that noticable, but faster ram do help when your planning to do some serious overclocking. :)

That was true up until about 2 month ago. Intel finally got a wake up call since then though. I have also been an AMD fan ever since I had a 1.4 GHz Thunderbird. But, when the Intel 2.4C was overclocking to 3.6 GHz I went Intel again. When the Athlon64 emerged they creamed Intel totally and they were the # 1 choice again. Now Conroe is ahead .... you getting the picture :D

At the end of the day I want the FASTEST CPU in my PC available at the time. And today it happens to be the Intel Core 2 Duo.

This will be true for another 4 days.... then the conroe comes out and everything you've known to be true will be destroyed.

As an example the Conroe E6600, THE THIRD SLOWEST CPU IN THE CONROE LAUNCH RANGE, beats the AMD FX-62 in benchmarks and tests including gaming, and will sell for between R3000 and R4000. The FX-62 goes for no less than R8000, probably more. It also runs cooler and with less power consumption under load.

Welcome to Episode 5: The Empire Strikes Back
