Hello everyone!

I currently have a AMD Phenom x6 1090T black edition CPU and a Asus Crosshair IV Formula Mobo.

My question is... Will I see a significant change in processing power (Playing games better, rendering HD movies better) moving to an Intel i7 or am I better off sticking with my 6-core AMD?

I am looking specifically at 2 Intel CPU's

Intel Core i7-3820 3.60GHz (LGA2011)

Intel Core i7-3930K 3.20GHz (LGA2011)

I have the money to spend on an i7 but is it worth it or should I spend my money elsewhere.

If anybody has some opinions to share or feedback please lay it down :)

Thanks!

Rest of my specs are:

AMD XFX HD R7970 Black Edition
OCZ 850W PSU
120GB SSD OCZ Agility (Boot)
2TB WD Internal (Storage)
8GB Kingston hyperX RAM 1666Mhz

I am willing of course to change my mobo as mine is an AMD only one.
I will need a new case too as the one I currently have has poor airflow.

I would also like to go for water cooling if I get a new CPU.

You'd see an improvement, but not worth the cost. Rather use the cash to get a nice sony/Samsung lcd tv or or even better invest/save it.

Games, no. Most CPU's are waaaaay overkill for what games need anyways. (They're designed for 6-year old consoles and just ported over). Games just aren't that CPU intensive and still don't use all the cores/threads properly. The graphics card is far more important.

That said you seem to have tons of cash to waste so why not get a decent headphone setup? I mean, a proper amp and audiophile-grade stuff, like a Sennheiser HD 650/700 or AKG K701, not "gaming" junk. Or as has been suggested a fancy monitor (IPS of course).

Depends on the game. You would need to see what games you got and go find benchmarks.

Some games are pretty cpu intensive but for the most part your rig looks fine.

I have almost exactly the same rig as you... I have an overclockers mobo though.

I have the corsair H60 and the Coolermaster Silencio 550... temps arent ultra cool, but they are fine for my rig. I dont care whether my cpu is running at 8deg or 28deg. there will be no impact on performance.

Rather save the cash for now, and wait for the next core I or amd upgrade... these processors of ours are more than ample for the games currently out... You can also overclock them relatively easily if you want a little more performance.

If you have to be the first person in on every map you load, then get the new i7... otherwise, you are probably just wasting your money for now...

You can rather get a decent cooler for your CPU and then just overclock it by a nice margin (20%+).

The LGA 2011 components are extremely expensive!
If you want to upgrade, you can rather have a look at the Socket 1155 Ivy Bridge setups (Z77 motherboard + i7 3770k CPU + aftermarket CPU cooler).

Lastly, what video rendering are you doing? If you're regularly doing this, then it could be worth while to upgrade the CPU - see: http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/ivy-bridge-benchmark-core-i7-3770k,3181-19.html

I'd say if you're not doing any paid work on your system, then just get a decent CPU cooler and overclock it for now.

As someone mentioned Piledriver is coming. That would be better to upgrade to.

i7 is not worth it for gaming. Go with cheap ivy bridge. That's what they suggested to me and it worked out. rather spend more on the gpu or something else

You have a pretty decent rig there, no need to upgrade!

Maybe take a bit of the money you have and buy yourself a new case. Get a decent cooler and overclock your CPU a bit. Maybe get a new monitor like someone suggested (That monitor in the links looks great for the price).

Only start looking at upgrading your system once the next generation of cpus from amd & intel come out. Then you can stick that into the new case you got above.

Reading thread before posting = win
not reading thread befor posting = fail

Being an amd fanboy = fail
Still being an amd fanboy in 2012 = even bigger fail

Actually amd no longer holds the price / performance crown. If you buy you should buy intel for no other reason than they offer the best performance for your money. AMD are basically out the cpu market, they have even said as much.

Not this schite again...

lol...

Arguements are hilarious because everyone did what they did 1/2/3/4/10 etc years ago for a specific reason.

Let me tell you the facts.

Intel is better than AMD.

When I bought my Phenom II X6 1090 - I put it onto a motherboard that was initially set up for a Athlon 5600+ Dual core pc. All i had to do was update the bios. I was running DDR2 800 ram at the time. (I have in the interim got a better board)

Could you do that with any Intel boards up until 2011/2012? not as far as i know... not when upgrading to a 'new' stepping/ technology.

So if not, then surely price of whole package should be a consideration? You need a mobo and processor almost every time you upgrade your processor when doing it on Intel... a mobo on Amd is always necessary at some point or another, but depending on the setup, and what you need your pc for, you can get by with old tech....

having said all of that... I will most likely be buying an Intel processor next time i upgrade...

but to tell someone they fail because they didnt buy what you bought is a bit harsh dont you think?

No i said being an amd fanboy = fail (buy what is good not because x company makes it)
Still being an amd fanboy in 2012 when it is clearly obvious that they offer nothing over intel anymore then it's a fail because you are buying out of loyalty and not common sense :D. Believe me intel and amd could not give a F about their loyal fans so why do people become so loyal to one company?

Pretty simple rule, buy what is the best for what you can afford. Who cares if intel or amd make it. I only bring this up because the notorious amd fan boy is on the prowl :p, starts with Q ends, rhymes with a wick. :p

Well i am not a fanboy... but i am currently using amd. It loads into maps at more or less the same speed as the i7 2600K with a gtx 580, and same ssd, so i could care less if it loads into windows 1 second faster, or renders an image in 10 seconds less cos all i do is play bf3, study, watch movies/series and read 9gag on my pc...

Everything else is meaningless for me at this point :)

I will still buy the best cpu when the time comes to upgrade... most likely an intel (in 12-24 months time)

i support amd low-midrange cpu's , because intel low range cant overclock , cpu that cant overclock is not a real cpu :P

like i bought fx6100 for R1300 new from the supplier, for same price i could buy i3 2130 or something the i5's cost about R1600 or more, the i3 might be faster at stock, but when overclocked the fx6100 makes mince meat of it :P

and yes i overclock everything :P

i did own 2600k for quite a while, it's damn fast, but games really does not need a 2600k so i sold it :P

Yea but you got a nice cpu there, amd has really fallen apart since bulldozer has come out and one excuse is it was build for windows 8 but then why release it when windows 8 is not even close to being released haha.

I am still using my 920 and a q9550 for work, Although the upgrade bug can be hard to stop :D but at some point common sense must prevail :D.
