Amobia speed upgrades

Hey guys
I've signed up with Amobia on the 6th of this month (No Telkom line available in my complex).
All was good with them at the time (any downloads including nzb's and torrents) but since then (about the beginning of last week), the nzb and torrent downloads are basically non-existent. Is it the same for you guys?
PS. All other downloads (youtube, updates, etc) are at near full speed.

Yep, initially all dl's were flying...but three weeks ago everything went pear shaped. The sales team eventually confirmed that they throttle torrents and nzb's, although Tech would not confirm it.

My connection is generally stable and fast. I use anything from 30GB to 90GB in a month but I don't use NNTP or torrents. It's generally work related and or software updates etc.

It is a shaped service so I wouldn't expect decent speeds for torrents NNTP or other traffic.

iTunes etc are all fine. 3mbps is a little slow to stream video content via the iTunes Store but if you leave it buffer for 10 or 15 minutes its generally ok provided you set the Apple TV etc to SD

I watched a full movie directly from the internet a few months back when I was still on the 1Mbps line, no buffering.

Agreed. On 1mbps I can watch 360p on youtube without buffering and even internet TV from overseas, but recent shapings made radio and TV impossible.

Why does everyone assume because Telkom (ADSL) speeds are bumped up your WISP is doing it as well?

WISP's have nothing to do with Telkom....

Time I got a guy to come and dig up and route a pipe to telkom infrastructure. Ignored it for almost 2 years, but to be honest, Axxess uncapped plus line at 4mbps is cheaper than the 3mbps uncapped I get now.

Have been having alot of latency and disconnects in the past 2 months. Tired of it now

"R199" capped account. Cap also increased to 2GB.

the 4mb accounts is active in Gauteng. just phone sales and ask for migration forms, 4mb cost same as 3mb used to be.

Apparently in CT they are still in the process of upgrading towers/equipment, so it's going to take some more time to get upgraded

how bad are torrents and SAb downloads on Amobia?

I can only speak to torrents on the (now) 4mps uncapped package...they are shaped heavily. They do warn you about this on the sign-up form (the capped packages have P2P on the recommended usages column while the uncapped packages do not).

How heavy you ask? Less than 5% of a 460mb tv episode came down today when I forgot to switch over from Amobia to my ADSL connection when I left for work (that's from just after 6am to around 7pm). You can work around by using other protocols to achieve the same ends. I do like the streaming performance I've been getting recently - I have been using alot of XBMC addons for documentaries and such which works really well.
