An extra public holiday looming

Good Friday coinciding with Human Rights Day

Yesterday I heard this on the radio for the first time. I never even occured to me that they are on the same day until I confirmed it on the calender yesterday.

I heard that some people are petitioning Thabo Mbeki to make thursday a public holiday as well.

Somebody told me they read in a newspaper that if you work on friday you have to get double what you would normally get on a public holiday, ie you must get 4x your normal pay. Please tell this is true because I am supposed to work on friday.

Let's get this straight...a public holiday is not a right - it's a priviledge. It is, if you actually put your brain into action, a celebration and/or day to remember or celebrate a certain event. I think we're lucky that it's even a day off, rather than just a celebration.

The fact that ZA already stipulates a MON proceeding a public holiday off is absurd. What for? ...because you're too drunk and foolish to stop the night before?

Imo, the unions bugging the president for another day are selfish, ignorant, and clueless.

It's not a man-made issue. The ZA calendar collided with itself.

Considering the current HUGE economic crisis in ZA, I would hope the president tells the workforce to get the F' back to work.

I for one have no issue with working the day. The clueless slacker masses want money for nothing. My opinion.

...and one other thing, one of the days clashing, is, and forgive my ignorance of religion here, Good Friday...a Christian day. Now, considering that a LARGE number of the workers in ZA are NOT Christian, wtF does that even give you the day off?

Strange that ALL get the Christian holidays off, yet we don't get Jewish/Muslim/etc. days off. Food for thought.

What is wrong with you man. I would love a day off and a day to sleep late and relax. If you enjoy going into work everyday then there is something wrong with you. To think like that is showing you are brainwashed by capitalism.

I agree with you on the Jewish/Muslim holidays though. The more the merrier.

So these two holidays fall on the same day? So what? It means you only get one actual public holiday. Big deal. They coincided.

There are worse things that can happen.

A Public Holiday is a right dude, it's law. You can't do anything about it.
Sure you can whip your slaves and make them work, but these days we follow more egalitarian systems of government. If there are supposed to be
X public holidays they should make it so.

In Muslim countries, Christian holidays are NOT celebrated (given time off).
In Israel its ONLY the Jewish holidays which are celebrated. In many places,
in the West people make arrangements, and get their religious days off in exchange for working the Christian ones.

Most workers in SA are Christian. I think most people in SA are happy celebrating Easter and Christmas.

Has anyone heard any further details on this? There is now a rumour going around that Thursday may also be a holiday, anyone able to confirm?

You are indeed ignorant! Do you have any idea how many people go to church on Good Friday?

Do you know?

I am debating Mikroz statement from my point of observation and experience. That knowledge is by no means a general fact about South Africa unless we have factual numbers from every sector of our diverse working society.

I know that Lekganyane alone attracts approximately 2 million of the 4-5 million ZCC members to Moria. Those who cannot attended Moria have services in up to 4000 parishes around SA. Most of those who attended Moria are the working class who can afford to go there.

I know that a huge majority of people flock into churches on Thursday night, Friday and Sunday of the easter weekend. Those are the highest numbers in large number of churches during a calender year which is why you will find tents erected to accommodate that influx.

I am also wondering this. It's going to be pretty short notice at this rate.
