Malema is not quite as popular as he seems. It's just that he knows how to punch way above his weight in the media and has a rabid social media following. So if all you see is the mainstream news and the extremists on Twitter, FB, etc you could be forgiven for thinking he has a much bigger following than he does.

That said, his following is not insignificant by any means, it's just not as widespread as you might believe. There is a surprisingly large amount of moderate black voters that do not buy into his narrative. Unfortunately, they are also likely to be disillusioned former ANC voters who are also sceptical of the DA and who will probably not bother to vote at all.
