ANC considers tablets for schools

Done right this could work very well and actually be logistically more sensible than textbooks.

Firstly you don't have stock piles of books to warehouse and ship to schools...so no potential ****ups there. Everything is digital.

Secondly the devices can be managed and strictly controlled so saying they'll play games on it is stupid.

Lastly providing content to kids and writing exams and what not could be infinitely enhanced going digital. Imagine you have a test in class? Simply publish it from a web service and everyone writes their tests.

All results are instantly available to the teach and marking is infinitely easier and faster and everything is documented.

It sounds illogical at first, but if done right it could solve so many current issues.

Some of the private schools are starting to use tablets, and so far its been a total Fup. Some of the kids are on their 4th tablet this year alone. Imagine a township kid now trying to replace a R2000 tablet because his broke or was stolen. On top of that, textbooks are drm locked to the device, so you have to repurchase them every year, and the teachers are saying the kids just play games all the time in class and there is no way they can monitor it.
Use it in university- Im 100% behind, but schools is a completely different animal.

Win win for the anc. So they have guaranteed higher demand due to kids breaking them so they'll have a constant kickback flow to rely on.

I looked into tablets for schools with some co-workers a few months ago.
We were planning it initially as a sideline, then if it works, as full-time.
The group involved included some Software Developers, a Hardware engineer, a former School Teacher, Systems and Business Analysts.
We spoke to tablet manufacturers, educators, looked at software, evaluated the pitfalls and potential problems.
One headmaster put it best. He'd like a few for the media centre, but most SA schools are not ready for that concept yet.
The idea died a quiet death. Shelved for a few years. Would still love to get the senior grades into Khan Academy in some way.
(Thinking a projector with a android mini pc)

If this is not a election promise - its going to be a disaster.

Already signs of a bad implementation right there.

Devices should be managed and locked down by a central system.

It shouldn't be a case of here's a tablet, do with it what you like.

DRM isn't necessarily the end of the world, all depends how it's implemented.

I think if its executed properly this is a great idea...... Instant access to "reusable books" for a lifetime........ 1 app that gives access to all the stuff needed. Study guids multiple question sheets and once they get into class their table will be able to update via wifi with the lastest stuff.....

Will it work? not sure but it definitely can work and will most likely incourage reading.... I would have loved to have a tablet to read ebooks in school than reading those stupid normal books

disprin, compral or grandpa?

I'd like to think that most people saw it as an impossible campaign promise, but it could have swung a few to vote DA. In the same way, the ANC can't give a tablet to every student, but they can trick some people into thinking that they can.

100%
I'd get shlt done.
But I fail to see what your commenting on my comments has to do with the article.
Aaaaaand back on topic....

I'll be simple: Keyboard activism leads to nothing.

Dibs on the 50 million tender for educational software once they realize it doesn't come with edu software.

I'll also be accepting CVs via PM...I need a business partner with the right level of melanin.

I'm thinking wordpress with a Khan academy mirror...I think I'll have to buy a wordpress template though. Oh well...only R49 999 900 profit then.

Seriously though...they are too fckin incompetent to get textbooks to kids and now they want to use tablets. Dear god...

+1

My daughters school started using them this year and so far it seems to be working out well. Only 6 months in though. They went with the Nexus 7. Grade 10.

DRM is not necessary at all. The department knows how many students are in the schools and the grade. Pay the publishers based on tha number.

Not in the Eastern Cape. The Department of Education here asked Stats SA to do a count of teachers and pupils in the province.

It is the easiest way of resolving the textbook issue.
no you dumb ****ing w a n k a, the easiest way is to simply do your job. Yes, it's amazingly simple and elegant... let me say it again if you missed it, simply "do... your... job". You don't have to do it good, you just have to do it. When the school year is close to an end, check the books needed for the next year. Check the stock, if you have less than what's needed, order the difference. Then when they arrive, uhm... I know this is very complex, but a lot of ppl get it right... just... deliver them.

Hey, if the losers that came up with apartheid-my-brotha can do it, I'm sure the ANC can do it. You keep on telling us all that y'all are better than those losers... it's time to prove it.

Oh, and who the **** are going to pay for these stolen tablets, the tax-payers - yes baby, you & me who work our buts off to support the *******s who steal stuff.

And another thing... how many times have you dropped your textbook at school? Lots of times, I'm sure. How many times did your textbook's screen break when you dropped it?
