Johannesburg - The ANC expressed regret on Friday that the Libyan conflict could only come to an end with the "gruesome killing" of Muammar Gaddafi.

"It is the view of the ANC that this could have been avoided had the African Union roadmap been adopted," spokesperson Jackson Mthembu said in a statement.

"We are as convinced now as we were then that a peaceful approach would have saved many lives in Libya if it was given a chance."

Mthembu said Libyans needed help in rebuilding their country after the devastation caused during the conflict.

Working together

"We believe that this challenge will require countries [around the world] to give Libyans a chance to define themselves as a unified nation... and form a government that will embrace all Libyans irrespective of where they stood in the conflict," he said.

"Let us work together in the endeavour of healing the wounds and the creation of a platform for a new Libyan nation."

Mthembu also called on countries under the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (Nato) command to cease their bombardment of Libya.

Gaddafi was shot dead in his hometown of Sirte on Thursday.

As news of his death spread, images of the 69-year-old former leader's bloodied body were broadcast across the globe.

‘An example of imperialist barbarism’

The Congress of SA Trade Unions (Cosatu) on Friday condemned the way world media were broadcasting and publishing images of Gaddafi's body.

"This triumphalism is an example of imperialist barbarism at its worst," Cosatu spokesperson Patrick Craven said in a statement on Friday.

"The only force which has the right to overthrow his dictatorial regime is the Libyan people and not the military might of imperialist powers whose sole concern is to safeguard and promote their economic interests in this oil-rich country," Craven said.

He said Gaddafi should have been charged in the International Court of Justice and not executed in a manner that resembled "cold-blooded murder".

Gaddafi is the first leader to be killed in the so-called "Arab Spring" uprisings that began in the Middle East last year.

Their opinion is about as valuable as the gaseous discharge about to exit my arse.

translation:
"Everyone should have given us some more time so that we could figure out a way for Gadaffi to cling to power for another few decades"

WTF is this "AU Roadmap" in any case?

I also find his death very regrettable, they should of kept the bastard alive and made him parade the streets of Benghazi while residents pelt him with rotten fruits

Their opinion is about as valuable as the gaseous discharge about to exit my arse.

I'm also trying hard at the moment, but might get a little more than I bargained for, and that is exactly how I feel about the ANC.

Rather embarrassing having a recipient of this country's highest honour suffering a barbaric bloody demise at the hands of his own people being broadcast to the world.

Poor Mandela losing his "brother leader" who he praised for his "commitment to the fight for peace and human rights in the world" in such way. :o

I wonder what will now happen to all of Brother Leader's tin that he had stashed here in various "investments"

So now that he is dead, is Libya going to become super-awesome?

Watching one of the videos, where his body (he looked dead already) was being kicked by a screeching bunch of lunatics, I have to wonder if the cycle of savagery has an endpoint.

Why the long faces, his death was an African solution to an African problem.

HAHAHAHA

How the stories change over time.. Zuma thinks his opinion counts after he talks k@k to the worlds media.

An old article 5/30/11.. "Gaddafi Ready For Truce, Says South African President"
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/05/30/gaddafi-ready-truce-south-africa-president_n_868841.html

TRIPOLI, Libya -- Moammar Gadhafi is ready for a truce to stop the fighting in his country, the visiting South African president said Monday after meeting the Libyan ruler, but he listed familiar Gadhafi conditions that have scuttled previous cease-fire efforts. Rebels quickly rejected the offer.

South African President Jacob Zuma said Gadhafi is ready to accept an African Union initiative for a cease-fire that would stop all hostilities, including NATO airstrikes in support of rebel forces. "He is ready to implement the road map," Zuma said.

The only person to blame for his gory death is Muamar himself. He was given plenty of opportunities to surrender in a dignified manner.
He chose this route. WTF, did he think they were going to do a song and dance with him when they captured him?
Stupid moron.

And yes, he was definitely executed. Go and watch all the videos on LiveLeak and see for yourself.

This. He was an evil man and killing him 1000000 times over will not make up for what he did. They acted no better than he
did. ( no I'm not a kaddoefi fan)
