The DA's polling shows that the ANC's support could drop to less than 50 percent in Gauteng, the party's premier candidate Mmusi Maimane said on Monday.

President Jacob Zuma was the main reason for this decline, he said in a statement.

"President Zuma's favourability in Gauteng among people who previously supported the ANC stands at a mere 18 percent -- half of what it is in the rest of the country.

"The reason, according to our research, is that Gauteng residents believe that Jacob Zuma has changed the ANC."

The African National Congress under Zuma had given up on creating jobs and had allowed corruption to flourish, he said.

Maimane was presenting a preview to the Democratic Alliance's election manifesto, which will be officially launched in March.

"I have a plan to bring change and hope to this province. It includes a plan to create an environment for job creation and growth and a plan to crack down on the corruption that continues to deny opportunities to our people."

Maimane said the party would create jobs and expand opportunities for all in Gauteng.

It would do this by expanding support to bridge the study-work divide for the youth through a graduate recruitment programme and a government internship programme. The party would also create jobs through an extended public works programme.

It would make it easier for small businesses to win government contracts by breaking down large tenders into smaller opportunities and by expanding community supplier databases, Maimane said.

The DA in Gauteng would also continue to fight e-tolls by calling a provincial referendum.

He said the DA would cut corruption out of the government.

It would manage public money better by reducing and restructuring the number of government departments in the province and would remove corrupt officials.

The party would also open tender committee meetings to the public to increase transparency.

"In 2014 we can choose the path of change and jobs, or we can choose five more years of the same from Zuma's ANC," said Maimane.

"As premier, I will make jobs my top priority, stop corruption in government and fight against the unjust taxation of Gauteng residents through e-tolling."

This is not a surprise..

I actually fully expect the ANC to do well in KZN, but to fair badly in the non Zulu provinces.
He has effectively turned the ANC into a Zulu party, and this won't go down well with the Xhosa members.

They will probably do best in the non Zulu provinces of MP & LP where they will still get 80%+

Granted, I do not know much about the political landscape in MP or LP.. but NC, EC, GP, FS etc I expect them to not do so well... I would also be surprised to see them get 80%+ even in MP/LP.. but hey.

You do not think that the EFF and one or two others won't erode the ANC's dominance in LP?

How do you eat an elephant? Piece by piece.

Hopefully the ANC see a truly significant loss of votes this time around.

They will still clear 80%. I think EFF will eat into some of the youth vote and most of what COPE held. COPE were second in the last election. The DA is sadly all but invisible in the rural areas.

You may be surprised by the showing of the DA in some rural areas in this country.

I've seen a fair number of photos of the DA packing out community halls in very very rural locations recently.

Yes, let's not forget that with Zuma at the helm the ANC have cannibalised the IFP. This means they've steadily been losing Xhosa votes for some time.

It was a Xhosa party under Mbeki and it did well in the non Xhosa provinces. :D

I'm not surprised. Last I heard the DA were gaining big momentum in GP but the EFF may be a stumbling block, such as was COPE.

Still think we can get some unexpected (well, for some mybb members) alliances in GP if ANC doesn't get 50%.

Lol really? I thnk your crystal ball is clouded from your red beret

Not sure what you mean by that ?

But no DA supporter would ever switch to the EFF, they are complete opposites.

It's like a Democrat voting for Lenin.

The EFF and Agang are also highly contesting Limpopo. People still vote on tribal lines, although I still expect the ANC to take the provinces.

You'll surprised. I know someone that voted FF+ in 2004, didn't vote 2009 and is considering EFF for 2014.

A bit of a FU to the system.

I hate coalitions. The idea that a party you voted for getting into bed with a party whose policies go against your values and the very reason you didn't for it.
