Thanks for the link. I experienced a moment of pre-emptive nostalgia when I read the opening line: "You'll never be left in the dark in this part of Africa."

Still, this doesn't address the issue that the ANC does whatever the hell it wants, whether the newspapers complain about it or not. Hell, we've been bitching about the arms deal for over 10 years now. Made no difference.

Why is the ANC suddenly scared of the print media?
 
I'm not really sure, and we can only guess I suppose. Possibly they feel that the tide is changing, and with the recent DA ward victories in traditionally "black" areas, maybe they feel threatened.

They've always done what they want and most likely always will, but the more educated the voter base becomes, the less secure their position.

They aren't scared of the minority reading newspapers, but the majority. I think a lot of migration is happening to urban areas where there is probably more access to printed media. Remember, they have all the statistics, so if they're planning on censoring the media, they must have a reason for it :(.
 
The media is no different to ANC, both feed us endless lies and distort the truth for their own personal gain. Just two giant lying bigots playing tit for tat. I'm all in favour of a 9 round boxing match between the two.

I agree to a point, they are generally two sides of the same coin really. But there is still some unbiased reporting out there... although it's becoming rarer and rarer. Doesn't change the fact that media censorship is something you'd expect in North Korea or China... scary that it's a possibility here.

However, it's very difficult to fully censor the media.

The plan is progressing. The latest genius plan is to amalgamate the Metro police with the SAPS. This bears the grubby fingerprints of the government’s mission to centralise all potential threats to their hegemony. The attack on the media is just the latest. The plan is proceeding apace with some of the major tasks on the agenda complete.

#1 The commando’s have been disbanded. Check.

SAns will never be allowed to return to anything remotely resembling a khaki clad group of men with white skin and guns. The image is one the AWB cultivated and the word commando has an instant association with the word ‘Boer’. This is a pity because they had the infrastructure (ambulances, hospitals, etc.), the command structure and a large, disciplined body of men who could be activated at a moments notice. They would have been useful for natural catastrophes (climate change), bush fires, floods, earth quakes, etc. They didn’t wimp-out easily.

#2 The navy has been rendered ineffectual. Check.

#3 The air-force has been rendered ineffectual. Check.

#4 The army has been rendered useless and has provided a patronage haven for supporters. Check.

#5 The population has been disarmed. Ongoing.

#6 Restrictive legislation has been put into place to prevent the population from importing weaponry (to protect themselves from criminals). Check.

#7 Any half-way effective police unit has been disbanded like child-abuse, rape etc. units and the Scorpions (of course). Check.

#8 The Metro police have been centralised with the SAPS. Ongoing.

#9 School shooting teams have been disbanded. Check.

I am especially narked about #9. One of my sons got his school colours for musketry (shooting) in grade 8. He was in the last cohort of students before the school shooting team was disbanded (he didn’t wear khaki incidentally – school uniform). His colours were quite a rarity because the means of getting them didn’t exist any longer. He traded on this for the rest of his school career. NOTE: In SA, many all-boys high schools had shooting teams. They competed with one another.

I can't help but agree with the nutters on this forum.

I always thought that despite their craziness the ANC had some level of common-sense which always came through at the last minute- just as one of the radicals was hatching a crazy plan.

Here's my view of the matter.

Zuma's been hurt by all the bad press...starting from his corruption trial, rape case and the illegitimate kid. Muzzling the press, or the threat is possibly his way of getting back at them, especially the Sunday Times and Mail and Guardian.

The ANC realising that they have little control over people between elections(when they actually have to deliver) want to muzzle any criticism. Service delivery protests weren't started by media reports, they started because people became frustrated with a ruling class who have become more obsessed with material wealth and its attainment then actually doing their jobs- delivering.

What they don't understand is that their main constituency do not consume media that is critical to them...I will speak under correction when I say most ANC voters read the Daily Sun, listen to SABC radio and watch the SABC news- hardly dissenting voices when it comes to the ruling party.

All that said any law that tries to muzzle the press will not be stand constitutional muster. They know this and I suspect its all just saber rattling.

PS: The new generation of black South Africans wont get their news from SABC but from the interwebs...mobile internet use has grown 100% in just one year.

The new generation of black South Africans will still ignore the news and vote along tribal lines first and colour second.

They will do this because township thugs will be spreading the message far & wide that if a person votes the wrong way the witchdoctors will tell the ANC about it with the result that a house will be burnt down and the family killed. At a personal level this tactic has worked well throughout Africa.

The next step will be along Mugabe's lines which is to take reprisals against whole villages which vote against him. Random rapes and killings will drive the message home irrespective of how the victims might have voted.

Once the ANC controls the press none of this (including crime stats which are already being doctored) will be published.
