Cape Town - The ANC is considering a total onslaught against the printed media, which it wants to rein in with legislation and investigations.

The documents for discussion at the ruling party's national executive council meeting in September have just been released. These include a document entitled "Transformation in the media, ownership and diversity".

It outlines the route the ANC wants to follow against a "neo-liberal" media which depicts the government as "weak and passive", that "over-emphasizes people's individual rights" and is "fundamentally market-driven".

The ANC states in no uncertain terms that "legislation and intervention" is needed to ensure a diverse media.

These discussion documents have emerged amidst the controversial proposed Protection of Information Act, which will allow the State to classify any information it deems sensitive and hand down heavy penalties to journalists.

According to the documents, it's the printed media in particular which is a thorn in the party's side because of reports which seldom paint the government in a positive light.

"A superficial audit of the printed media reveals an astounding degree of dishonesty, a lack of professional integrity and independence."

According to the ANC, corrupt journalists receive money to promote the agenda of certain political parties, and the "rot" is far worse than the media would like to admit.

The party takes particular exception to the fact that confidential information is leaked to the media after party meetings.

The document also states that corrections are never given sufficient prominence and that the press ombudsman (self-regulation) is ineffective.

"This situation is intolerable."

The ANC also feels it is its duty to intervene, in order to protect the media's credibility.

Is it just me, or is this now a time to start worrying about this, about the porn block (not the issue of "porn", the issue of "block"). Is their anything we can do to stop this?

This is like saying: The people do not have the right to know what their political parties are doing and thinking, perhaps the ANC should take a closer look at our constitution.

To the ANC: No taxes without representation, and silencing the media is simply lessening my already tiny representation.
Do this and you can kiss my tax money goodbye.
 
Hopefully this will just push the media to become even more aggressive and anti-government/ANC. Just remember that any law can still be challenged in court, especially if it violates the constitution.
 
However what is worrying is not that the ANC is discussing this from a government perspective, but a party perspective. This is hardly reassuring as separating party from state. The ANC does not have the same legal protection as the government, and the fact they believe they should is disconcerting.

Its very short sighted.. as with Zim, what is stopping these reporters from operating 'Outside' of South Africa. The SA Govt cant control people overseas :D

As to the Concourt... werent most of the judges replaced with pro-Zuma people?

Mmm, they're obviously referring to themselves here and not the media.

This is just so reminiscent of the Apartheid government when I was growing up, when newspapers where frequently 'banned' for carrying a story that the government did not agree with, exposed their dirty deeds, or just failed to report the news as the government wanted

The media should never be influenced by politial parties, the government or legislation. Is the ANC even aware of the Press Ombudsman, or do they simply not trust the impartiality of it?

The ANC is truly becoming more like the old Nats, where it is less about what can be delivered and more about what can be controlled.
 
Why are we being so negative, would the ruling party ever do anything for their own gain? Never! :D

My old ladtywas telling me about an interview she saw on the telly with some hot shot anc dude, he said something along the lines of 'The taxpayer does not need to know what we are doing with their money'.......WTF? :wtf:

So a the ANC wants to censor a bunch of disingenuous dishonest ideologues and possibly replace them with disingenuous dishonest party cronies
 
From what I've read I have to admit it's a well orchestrated plan (which btw is inline with NWO policy), get all the firearms out of civilian hands and after "we" have secured a big enough margin to ensure no chance of resistance then "we" start implementing our unjust, unconstitutional and restrictive laws. A very bad sign is the restrictions "they" want to impose on the media, yes the foreign press can report it but how will that help us, we will be left in the dark especially if "they" start censoring the internet.

It's all fine and well to say we will fight this but at the end of the day if "they" want to impose this on us "they" will, the only option then left is armed revolution which is the final phase of "their" plan, what excuse do "they" then need to exterminate us, none ! They will be justified in quelling a rebellion against the great democracy that is South Africa and welcomed with open arms by "their" NWO masters in Europe.

You all can make fun of me, ill wear my tinfoil hat with pride. Just know it will give me no satisfaction to stand in your face and say "I told you so", by then it will be too late ! If you are a sceptic do some research on what is happening to the most liberal country in the world (USA), see what "their" saviour Obama is doing to the constitution, then cross reference other countries and you will see the similarities in global policy change.
