I don't think they will not recover necessarily, they have a tough time ahead though.

Curious as to what Linus would have done if Steve had phoned him?
All the LTT videos are still up, so what difference would it have made?
Tech YES City also pointed out issues in a different video and no changes have been made to video.
Apart from money, LTT doesn't GAF about anything.

At least one has been pulled. There's a post on the LTT subreddit on how views have disappeared and it's most likely because they are pulling content that isn't up to par.
 
A lot of people are saying Steve should have gone to Linus directly, they're not wrong but most of the criticisms Linus had already responded to, much to the tune of 'I don't have money to spend on re-testing x'. None of those require further clarification because Linus made that clarification post-issues raised (by the community).

One could argue the Billet Labs issue did require clarification. However from Linus' 'emotional' reactions to this you can see that he didn't really think it was a problem.

I would argue that Billet labs forfeited their product and rights to some extent by sending the prototype to LMG. That said LMG acted upon it by not following any given recommendations and then published conclusions based on those rather questionable methodologies. This is an issue as they probably would not treat a more mainstream brand this way.

What it required was someone pulling Linus or one of the other higher ups aside and asking them what the hell was going on first, giving them (not their employees) a chance to fix it, and then body slamming them into the ground if there was no follow up.

Remember, most of this came about because someone (Colton I think) forgot to put in an email address. It's a stupid mistake that cascaded into a huge **** up, but it was ultimately a mistake.

Linus never was a good leader. The dude is too insecure and has often pushed back when criticised. However, he had the self-awareness to identify that and had a CEO about to formally replace him. This whole debacle just accelerated that.

Honestly though it's just too many consecutive mistakes in this saga.
  1. Not having the provided GPU with the part that was made specifically for it.
  2. Shooting the video anyway and potentially damaging the component on installation on the alternative GPU.
  3. Not communicating with Billet labs on what they had done prior to releasing the video as it was based off incorrect testing.
  4. Releasing the video (as in QA it should have been picked up that the conclusions drawn were based off incorrect testing).
  5. When Billet requested the part back, not sending it.
  6. Putting the item into an auction.
  7. Only at this point does the Colton email enter into the chain of events.

The change happened before the controversy but it's certainly going to help them overall. That said their tongue in cheek video addressing things had all their usual jokes which given the serious nature of the matter was tone deaf and snarky. Additionally some of the statements were to the effect of 'I'm sorry but' or 'I don't agree with all of it but', a more thought out response would have addressed specifically what was not agreed with instead of handwaving it away as this raises the question of well what exactly are they going to be addressing if they don't agree with some of the criticism? Remember they did boast about their lab, yet it's not delivering on accuracy for pretty major benchmarks?

But, I think that was before Madison claimed harrasment etc.

So the weird thing is I have no issue with the video. If I remember they did have a 3090 (it was one sent with the prototype) but Linus thought it was such a weird niche product and wondered how it would fair with a more modern 4090.

Yes, it was not designed for it, but it's still a cool what if scenario. Turns out that it offered no benefits, which brought LTT back to their original question: why even bother?

Ultimately it's a super niche product and they should have made it clear in their conclusion that it doesn't offer any benefits to a 4090 while also providing benchmarks of it in its intended use-case.

In regards to the whole interaction and being sent to LTT in the first place: has Billet seen what these guys have been up to? They used an industrial fan to air cool a pc. I'm surprised they sent their prototype through expecting it to come back in one piece to be honest. Especially with how often Linus drops things.

Also thought 5 and 7 were swapped around on your list, but that's probably my bad.

Did you see the bit where Billet stated afterwards that that sink on a 4090 would leave a millimeter gap between the core and the heatsink?
No wonder there was no benefit.
Did they actually benchmark it with a 3090?

It doesn't matter if it was properly tested or not. LLT like any other channel on YouTube is for entertainment. Essentially they can do and show what they want. They don't have to be factual or accurate. That is the biggest problem I see here. People forget YouTube is not the news, it is not the tech that works on your computer. It is intertwinement first.

Don't forget that LTT was positioning themselves to be accurate lab testers and that they had just dumped on other channels for being amateurish with their testing.
 
I don't care. Cry... Linus did this... Cry Linus did that... Gen Z is useless. Millennials are useless. Look at the world they are creating. I am so glad I worked with a bunch of gen X people. I wouldn't have what I have today if it wasn't for them.

I worked till 1:00 AM I am getting paid today and paid well at that. I don't need LTT, all this crap. Forget them forget every single tech channel. We don't need them.

The irony is people are crying because they can. LTT charts, so call miss information and someone that is building the most expensive heatsink on the market is crying. Is anyone going to buy that thing? No... In 5 years that GPU that is strapped to that heatsink will be old, a total waste of money and just stupid.

I run a lot of old equipment that makes it possible for me to have a livelihood. Linus has never spoke about or touched on any of those devices I use. Not a single one of them. Same goes for GN. They are tech snobs every channel is "look at my killer setup" yea sure it looks nice because you have financial stability in a first world. Good for you.

Rest of us have our faces against the grinding wheel working with stuff they never even heard about. So what value do they bring to me? none.

YouTube is good for music and nothing else.

It's... not that simple.

I'll use my industry and experiences as anecdotes.

Early this year, a competitor and I congratulated each other on something we both achieved. A few weeks later they complained to a disti about being unable to compete with my pricing.

It's an extremely tight industry. I know most of my competitors and have spoken with them, and have direct contacts to many of them. I've pointed out to one of the far larger ones that another was copy/pasting their product descriptions to the extent that Company B had "Company A recommends" in their product description. Trust me, if you're doing this as anything more than a hobby, everyone knows everyone.

If any one of them got attacked, I'd likely be first to let them know and would appreciate the same courtesy in return, but if any of them slip up, inside I would love to publicly bring them down several notches but absolutely won't act on it. I think it's highly unprofessional and will, more likely than not, put me in a worse light than them. My wife told me something many many years ago which has stuck with me. "Blowing out someone else's candle doesn't make yours burn brighter."

I feel like this is a similar situation. They'll look out for each other when it comes to outside attacks as it could happen to anyone, and it is nothing more than a professional courtesy, but the smaller guy believes that his little candle will burn far brighter if he sprinkles a bit of water on the much larger candle.
