Why is this such an issue. Why doesn't the ANC let the DA win the municipal elections and then they just go for country elections. The way I see it, we get services that work and the ANC still get to about business as usual. Except now, they don't even have to worry about delivering services.

That would mean they lose power, influence, tenders and ultimately money and voters.

What about what the people want? It's not about the ANC 'letting' the DA do anything it's about who the people vote for. Unfortunately, the reality is that whoever is in power is irrelevant - power attracts greed, corruption and selfishness.
If the DA were suddenly to win all the elections, all that would happen is that the selfish greedy corrupt power hungry people would join the DA.

If they are allowed in.
The DA fire the incompetent.

Less jobs for pals and less opportunity for graft. The ANC as a whole care more about enrichment of themselves than they do about the people. I thought that was obvious.

Ideally your scenario is what will happen. The problem for the ANC is that it'll be the thin edge of the wedge. Once the DA proves themselves SA competent on a local level more people will see them as viable nationally. Were the DA to take the majority of local governments the primary function of national government would become one of thwarting local government efforts.

The short answer is that the ANC is corrupt to the core and only interested in maintaining power for the elite.

Just off topic curiosity, if the DA win the national elections one day, do you guys think ANC will cede power, or will there be war?

Africa doesn't take kindly to liberation-movements-that-became-governments losing power.

And give up on over 10 000 positions for cadre deployment? (Yes, we'll have more than 10k councillor positions nationwide after the coming elections.) And those 10 000 council positions control the recruitment/placement of 500 000 further municipal civil service positions... Yes, the provincial and national deployees might earn a little more, but it's on municipal level you can really rake it in without anyone noticing... why would the Sunday Times investigate on what is going on with the municipal council in Notonthemap, Limpopo Province, if none of the residents even have a clue?

The golden question. It'd be a first for Africa if they did.

The DA could never win a national election, way too many anc tickers who just tick for no other reason than it says anc next to the box.

I would prefer this country to go to shyte over decades and not over night. The minute the ANC feel threatened the shyte will fly.

The last thing you want is a close election because all it brings is violence and civil war.

I think (hope) you’re right. The problem is in a situation where they have more posts available than they can fill. One hopes (in that situation) that they would go for the incompetent rather than the terminally corrupt. As long as training and mentorship is possible (incompetent) rather than blatant thievery and entitlement (corruption).
