Johannesburg - In its continued defence of President Jacob Zuma, the ANC Women's League (ANCWL) took aim at his detractors in an open letter on Wednesday; specifically Public Protector Thuli Madonsela.

After accusing religious leaders of "political opportunism" when they called for Zuma to step down, the ANCWL zoomed in on former finance minister Trevor Manuel, his wife and Barclays Africa Group CEO Maria Ramos, and the Ruperts.

"We, the ANC Women's League remain steadfast in the course to stand and lead at the front to protect the African National Congress," secretary general Meokgo Matuba said in a statement.

Matuba said the ANCWL was critical of Madonsela personally, but still respected the office.

She claimed that in 2011, Madonsela proclaimed to investigate the Ciex report, which was commissioned by the apartheid government and implicated Absa bank in corruption. However, nothing had come of this investigation.

"We demand a more objective and less populist person who will not campaign against government and its people, but defend principles of the structures," Matuba said of Madonsela.

Criticism

Johann Rupert had called for Zuma to resign following the Constitutional Court judgment which found he violated the Constitution for ignoring Madonsela's remedial action on his private Nkandla homestead.

Matuba claimed Rupert's Rembrandt Group had gained unlawfully from the apartheid government.

She criticised Manuel for his role in Barclays Group Ltd's purchase of Absa in early 2000. She claimed Barclays funded the apartheid government with “billions”, which were used to kill ANC operatives, PAC/Azapo combatants and civilians.

Matuba said the deal would not have been possible without Manuel's approval.

The ANCWL was adamant that former president Thabo Mbeki had introduced the Gupta family to Zuma, despite the former president denying this earlier in the week.

Matuba went into Ramos's history and her link with the Rupert family. She said the wealthy family had hosted Ramos and Manuel's wedding at one of their vineyards in Stellenbosch.

"In note of all the above, we have forgiven our leader, comrade President Jacob Zuma and remain steadfast in our quest, for economic freedom and equality alongside President Jacob Zuma," she said.

I feel sorry for ANC Women's League - Madonsela

Johannesburg - The ANCWL should focus on fighting for gender equality and inclusive development, instead of fighting wars which were not its own, Public Protector Thuli Madonsela told News24 on Wednesday.

"I really just think they are being misled. I think a lot of them are being used as proxies and I really feel sorry for them," she said after the ANC Women's League criticised her investigation of an apartheid-era banking scandal.

"Women shouldn't just be fighting for gender equality, they should be fighting for making sure that the state of South Africa is advancing everyone, because when the state fails, it's women who pick up the burden.

"I am not their enemy, maladministration is their enemy."

ANCWL's secretary general Meokgo Matuba said the ANCWL was critical of Madonsela personally, but still respected her office.

She claimed that in 2011, Madonsela proclaimed to investigate the Ciex report. It was commissioned by government and implicated an apartheid-era bank, Bankorp, which Absa acquired in 1992, in corruption. However she said, nothing had come of this investigation.

"To this day apartheid crimes remain unpunished and Absa Bank continues to operate with no penalties attached.

"We demand a more objective and less populist person who will not campaign against government and its people but defend principles of the structures," Matuba said.

The ANCWL’s criticism followed the Constitutional Court’s judgment last month that President Jacob Zuma violated the Constitution when he ignored Madonsela’s remedial action that he repay some of the money spent on so-called security upgrades to his private Nkandla homestead.

Madonsela said she was surprised by the ANCWL's interest in the Bankorp matter. She said she would clarify it, "for them to understand what they are dealing with".

She said the investigation into the Ciex report was not against any individual or organisation, but against government, and was a complex investigation.

"It is alleged that the government of the Republic of South Africa mishandled the opportunity to claim back the money that was paid to Bankorp during apartheid. It is a very complex investigation," Madonsela said.

Her office investigated alleged improper conduct of state actors, and she could only investigate matters which happened after the public protector’s office was established in 1995.

Madonsela said the only reason she agreed to investigate the Ciex report was because she was convinced to confine it to what happened between 1997 and 2001.

The only two people accused of wrongdoing were former president Nelson Mandela and the SA Reserve Bank governor at the time. Madonsela said her investigation into the matter was "moving forward".

Why is the WL always on a mission? They always take the most absurd position available...

Unpacking the crap:

"We demand a more objective and less populist person who will not campaign against government and its people, but defend principles of the structures," Matuba said of Madonsela.

Her objectivity is proven by her results which you are welcome to take on legally to prove your point, which no doubt you won't...

"We demand a more objective and less populist person who will not campaign against government and its people, but defend principles of the structures," Matuba said of Madonsela.

Her popularity and widespread support is earned. It is not the result of any populist, non-public-protector actions. If the public protector is popular and well-respected, he/she is doing a good job according to the people she protects...

"We demand a more objective and less populist person who will not campaign against government and its people, but defend principles of the structures," Matuba said of Madonsela.

She is free to do as she pleases, however in this case the politicians are campaigning while the public protector investigates. You're mixed up, you crazy wench...

"We demand a more objective and less populist person who will not campaign against government and its people, but defend principles of the structures," Matuba said of Madonsela.

She's there to investigate objectively. You claim you want more objectivity but demand qualities of a controlled individual to show favour to government, one of the organs intended to be investigated by the public protector...

"We demand a more objective and less populist person who will not campaign against government and its people, but defend principles of the structures," Matuba said of Madonsela.

Government does not own people. You are once again utterly confused and haven't the foggiest what you are talking about...

"We demand a more objective and less populist person who will not campaign against government and its people, but defend principles of the structures," Matuba said of Madonsela.

Again, you have no idea what the role of the public protector is. It is akin to witnessing a toddler explain quantum dynamics and what is required for successful quantum computing...

"We demand a more objective and less populist person who will not campaign against government and its people, but defend principles of the structures," Matuba said of Madonsela.

What structures? Politicians refer to their departments as structures, whereas this is not traditionally accepted nomenclature for the government, so one can only assume you are referring to your political party. You are once again too confused for words, but well done on having someone put the letters into order for you to piss out onto the public.

You, dear Meokgo Matuba, are an utter embarrassment to women, of which there exists I imagine a vast majority in this country alone who are capable of more coherent thought than the rambling crap you just insulted everyone with. In a single sentence you managed to demonstrate such an abundance of stupidity that the gravity of its presence caused it to implode and form a singularity of denseness, where nothing but randomly reassembled photons of energy radiate around and destroy the brain-cells of anything in its path. It is no wonder you are able to forgive Zuma. Had you two argued, I'm not sure we'd want to be around to witness the results...

I can only echo Thuli, one almost feel sorry for them as they are their own worst enemy.

It's like opposites. They crave economic freedom yet worship wealth-destroyers like Zuma, the PP is there to protect them against a corrupt government yet they defend their leaders' corruption etc.

It's kinda painful & sad to watch really.

What's the purpose of ANCWL? Looks like pity and "job creation" to me....

As much as watching the WL defend a MAN who abused the constitution by attacking the WOMAN who protects it makes my blood boil, nothing to see here folks, just a regular Wednesday for the special needs pond scum at top of the ANCWL structure.

While I'm all for gender equality, when the WL open their mouths I can't help but wonder.

They're the ones who stated that they would defend JZ with their buttocks.

Let them be known as the @sshole brigade after all the only thing you find between buttocks is an @sshole.

makes perfect sense for the women's league to attack a high profile, successful and well respected woman rather than an alleged rapist ... oh wait ...

The ANCWL has no relevance in our modern post-democratic society, except being a proxy for defending Zuma's name, just like the ANCYL.

They exist by name only, and are spent forces!

The REAL youth league became the EFF and is relevant today.
