Johannesburg - In its continued defence of President Jacob Zuma, the ANC Women's League (ANCWL) took aim at his detractors in an open letter on Wednesday; specifically Public Protector Thuli Madonsela.
After accusing religious leaders of "political opportunism" when they called for Zuma to step down, the ANCWL zoomed in on former finance minister Trevor Manuel, his wife and Barclays Africa Group CEO Maria Ramos, and the Ruperts.
"We, the ANC Women's League remain steadfast in the course to stand and lead at the front to protect the African National Congress," secretary general Meokgo Matuba said in a statement.
Matuba said the ANCWL was critical of Madonsela personally, but still respected the office.
She claimed that in 2011, Madonsela proclaimed to investigate the Ciex report, which was commissioned by the apartheid government and implicated Absa bank in corruption. However, nothing had come of this investigation.
"We demand a more objective and less populist person who will not campaign against government and its people, but defend principles of the structures," Matuba said of Madonsela.
Criticism
Johann Rupert had called for Zuma to resign following the Constitutional Court judgment which found he violated the Constitution for ignoring Madonsela's remedial action on his private Nkandla homestead.
Matuba claimed Rupert's Rembrandt Group had gained unlawfully from the apartheid government.
She criticised Manuel for his role in Barclays Group Ltd's purchase of Absa in early 2000. She claimed Barclays funded the apartheid government with “billions”, which were used to kill ANC operatives, PAC/Azapo combatants and civilians.
Matuba said the deal would not have been possible without Manuel's approval.
The ANCWL was adamant that former president Thabo Mbeki had introduced the Gupta family to Zuma, despite the former president denying this earlier in the week.
Matuba went into Ramos's history and her link with the Rupert family. She said the wealthy family had hosted Ramos and Manuel's wedding at one of their vineyards in Stellenbosch.
"In note of all the above, we have forgiven our leader, comrade President Jacob Zuma and remain steadfast in our quest, for economic freedom and equality alongside President Jacob Zuma," she said.
