Johannesburg - The South African education system was not adequate to serve the country's skills development needs, the ANC Youth League said on Thursday.

In an end of the year statement in which the ANCYL wishes South Africans a joyful, peaceful and productive new year, spokesperson Floyd Shivambu said President Zuma should every year send at least 10 000 students to universities outside the country.

"Our considered view is that every year, President Zuma should send not less than 10 000 students to the best universities across the world to get the best education and skills on important areas such as medicine, engineering, accounting, technology and science," he said.

"We believe that such a model would greatly contribute to the production of skills in South Africa because the reality is that our education system cannot produce as many graduates as possible."

Scholarship

The ANCYL said it would vigorously campaign for the government and Presidency to introduce a new scholarship to fund students studying outside the country.

The scholarship would take care of all the students' needs, including transport, accommodation, tuition fees, food and a monthly stipend.

"The scholarship we are proposing is not in opposition and not a contradiction to the National Students' Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) and will not reduce the amount of money and resources allocated to the NSFAS," said Shivambu.

He said the ANCYL would continue with campaigns for the transformation of Higher Education in South Africa and for increased funding particularly for disadvantaged students.

ANC education system inadequate - surely not ?

Look guys... I hate to be the one to tell you this... but you do actually have to go to school and attend the classes to actually get an education.

Toyi-toying in front of the school or burning it down doesn't actually transmit any learning or life skills.

What a counter revolutionary thing to say.

I wonder if their switch from the head-in-sand tactic is permanent.

no matter what your colour is, if you attend school every day as you should and take note of what is going on and actually learn something instead of bunking, toy-toying and acting like flippin skollies then maybe you can get a decent education.

what gets to me is how can you change a school system every 5 yrs because a new jerk is head of education and feels the need to shake the department up.

This is actually a pretty good idea...kinda like exchange student except this is one way, we just send our students over. I think when our youth go to the 1st world to study, they'll quickly realise that toy toying and burning down classes and jumping on desks like monkeys isn't gonna buy them a degree, they actually have to work hard and COMPETE with others to progress.

That's probably the main difference. Here they send in 1000s of student that won't make the grade purely because they want more graduates. These students are then subsidised into oblivion, and spend the majority of their time having a massive jol over the next 2-3 years, and end up without a degree.

Either that, or they start striking because the work is too hard :p

Across the border, at least they cannot strike.

you need 30% to pass matric nowadays :D

you kidding right ?

last i heard it was 35% and that shocked me, love to see the next generation getting a job anywhere in africa never mind the west ... this country will join the rest of africa in the next 5 years.

p.s rooster might not agree but thats his problem :)

It is obvious that the ANCYL didn't attend the ANC Economy 101 class. Why spend so much money on sending them overseas? Since merit and skill is actually not a requirement for a job anymore they can just print 10 000 degree certificates and give them to 10 000 ANCYL candidates (it is obvious who will be sent) and then the money saved can be used for more parties and expensive cars. And the SA economy will have 10000 more leaches to be employed.
