A dissident group of ANC Youth League members yesterday declared war on league president Julius Malema - in his own backyard, Limpopo - during a conference held with the blessing of Cosatu's and the SACP's provincial leaders.

Shouts rang through the Aboo A Tayob Community Centre as about 350 members raised their fists and chanted "War! War! War!". Each call of "Down with Julius Malema!" was responded to with a resounding "Down!".

It was bloodcurdling stuff on the eve of Malema's disciplinary hearing at Luthuli House in Joburg, where he is expected to plead guilty to defying his ANC seniors and bringing the party into disrepute.

Yesterday, the conference, called by an anti-Malema faction in Mokopane, followed in the wake of the chaotic Makhado conference two weeks ago where Malema's one-time ally, ousted Limpopo ANCYL leader Lehlogonolo Masoga, and his supporters walked out in protest at the goings-on.

Yesterday, they got their revenge. It was open season on Malema as speaker after speaker mocked him.

When Masoga took to the stage, the delegates burst into song. "My chairperson!" they sang.

He spoke out against the treatment of dissident members at the Makhado conference.

"If you can't express your opinion, then where is the ANC Youth League?" He said the ANCYL was not a "homogeneous organisation of non-thinking youth".

Youth League national secretary-general Vuyiswa Tulelo - who is close to Malema - boycotted the gathering and Malema-aligned branches also stayed away.

However, in what appeared to be an endorsement of Malema, Police Minister Nathi Mthethwa told a conference in Durban yesterday that the youth should be militant and vibrant, and recalled various leaders who had rocked the boat.

Meanwhile, Gauteng Premier Nomvula Mokonyane's campaign to lead the ANC in the province was dealt a blow when angry ANC Youth League structures overturned a decision by their leadership to nominate her - and instead chose to endorse Deputy Arts and Culture Minister Paul Mashatile.

Mashatile, the ANC's Gauteng chairman, will go head-to-head with Mokonyane at a highly anticipated provincial ANC conference in Pretoria this weekend.

The turnaround by branches, overturning the Gauteng nomination, points to Malema's diminishing influence within league structures - with several league leaders gearing up to support his deputy, Andile Lungisa, to challenge him at the league's conference next year.

It was unclear whether Malema would attend today's disciplinary hearing. Efforts to reach him yesterday were unsuccessful as his cellphone was switched off.

However, Derek Hanekom, who will chair the disciplinary process, insisted: "The hearing is scheduled to take place (today), as I have consistently said, and I don't have any further comment."

Militant? For what?

That was my though as well..

WTF do they have to be militant for?... they need to be vibrant and intelligent and ask questions.. not be bloody militant.

oung people should be militant and vibrant instead of being docile, says Police Minister Nathi Mthethwa.

He was addressing student leaders from tertiary institutions at the National Association of Student Development Practitioners conference in Durban on Sunday. The conference was intended for student leaders to exchange ideas on dealing with issues including crime and HIV and Aids at universities.

Mthethwa said former president Nelson Mandela had been an outspoken and key component of the armed struggle in his youth, while the late Robert Resha and Peter Mokaba had talked about killing white people.

"The ANC did not kill Peter Mokaba, he continued to be a leader in the political map of this country. We must not make youth docile. We want that militancy and vibrancy, it must all be there," he said.

Mthethwa, a member of the ANC's national executive committee, was speaking on the eve of ANC Youth League president Julius Malema's disciplinary hearing, which is expected to commence on Monday.

Malema stands accused of bringing the ANC into disrepute and of misconduct for disregarding ANC policy.

Mthethwa, however, denied that his comments were intended to defend Malema, who was not mentioned during his address.

He said he had been referring to the nature of the ANC, which had never been led by "docile" leaders.

"People must be built, not destroyed. The major thing is that when there is a war to be pursued in a revolutionary situation, the youth must be at the cutting edge of that situation. Nelson Mandela was extremely militant to the extent of being out of order. Resha was militant to the point of calling people to murder.

"Young people must be within parameters, but not blunt objects. We wouldn't be here if Mandela had been destroyed. I'm not defending anyone," said Mthethwa.

He also used the opportunity to defend the militarisation of the police, saying the government wanted to take a "tougher" stance on crime.

He added that the police were expected to combat crime within the boundaries of the law.

"We have balanced our approach to policing with emphasising that there will be greater accountability and civilian over- sight of the police," he said.

a million rand says more than 90% of the ANCYL don't know what homogeneous means :p

This is why I love politics so much. What was once an undisputed power base for the village idiot is slowly coming apart at the seams. Add to that his DC worries, Malema surely has to realise that he either needs to get inline, or push back with whatever leverage he has on senior ANC people.

Interesting stuff...

Agreed.

Most of the time when reading an M&G article a lot of the comments by black people were in support of Malema. The comments are now changing and becoming very negative towards Malema and to a degree Zuma as well.

I have noticed that as well, and either he or the people pulling his strings, need to wake up and realise that Zuma seems to destined to having one term as president.

Cape Town - ANC Youth League president Julius Malema has been listed in Time Magazine's Least Influential People of 2010.

The magazine says: "Malema is just like Joe Biden - if instead of innocuous, silly slipups, Biden delivered violent, racist, misogynist rants. It got so bad, he's been censured by his party and convicted of hate speech. So he just said violent things about the party."

Malema is to face disciplinary action after a statement by the leadership of the ANC stated it had presented the youth league president with complaints regarding his "deviant behaviour", reported Beeld.

Others included in the list Russian president Dmitry Medvedev; Michael Jackson's doctor, Conrad Murray; Oprah Winfrey's fiancé Stedman Graham; Balloon Boy's mother, Mayumi Heene; and the president of the US Metric Association, Lorelle Young.

The list was released at the same time as the annual Time 100 issue which includes former Mozambican first lady Graça Machel, US President Barack Obama, former Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin, sports stars Didier Drogba and Sachin Tendulkar, and South African director Neill Blomkamp.

Call me an optimistic fool, but things are finally starting to look good

By the end Zuma will see that his choices are biting him in the ass and then he will take steps to insure that he remains in power, be that through changing the constitution to make him president for life like Bob or turning the place into a war zone. He is a clone of Bob after all.

They say it's darkest before dawn, unfortunately we are nowhere near dawn yet. These @rseholes are not going to give up until they've raped SA to death.

Again these "changing of the constitution" comments emerge. You do know that the ANC no longer has a two thirds majority? So how exactly would he do this?
