A dissident group of ANC Youth League members yesterday declared war on league president Julius Malema - in his own backyard, Limpopo - during a conference held with the blessing of Cosatu's and the SACP's provincial leaders.
Shouts rang through the Aboo A Tayob Community Centre as about 350 members raised their fists and chanted "War! War! War!". Each call of "Down with Julius Malema!" was responded to with a resounding "Down!".
It was bloodcurdling stuff on the eve of Malema's disciplinary hearing at Luthuli House in Joburg, where he is expected to plead guilty to defying his ANC seniors and bringing the party into disrepute.

Yesterday, the conference, called by an anti-Malema faction in Mokopane, followed in the wake of the chaotic Makhado conference two weeks ago where Malema's one-time ally, ousted Limpopo ANCYL leader Lehlogonolo Masoga, and his supporters walked out in protest at the goings-on.
Yesterday, they got their revenge. It was open season on Malema as speaker after speaker mocked him.
When Masoga took to the stage, the delegates burst into song. "My chairperson!" they sang.
He spoke out against the treatment of dissident members at the Makhado conference.
"If you can't express your opinion, then where is the ANC Youth League?" He said the ANCYL was not a "homogeneous organisation of non-thinking youth".
Youth League national secretary-general Vuyiswa Tulelo - who is close to Malema - boycotted the gathering and Malema-aligned branches also stayed away.
However, in what appeared to be an endorsement of Malema, Police Minister Nathi Mthethwa told a conference in Durban yesterday that the youth should be militant and vibrant, and recalled various leaders who had rocked the boat.
Meanwhile, Gauteng Premier Nomvula Mokonyane's campaign to lead the ANC in the province was dealt a blow when angry ANC Youth League structures overturned a decision by their leadership to nominate her - and instead chose to endorse Deputy Arts and Culture Minister Paul Mashatile.
Mashatile, the ANC's Gauteng chairman, will go head-to-head with Mokonyane at a highly anticipated provincial ANC conference in Pretoria this weekend.
The turnaround by branches, overturning the Gauteng nomination, points to Malema's diminishing influence within league structures - with several league leaders gearing up to support his deputy, Andile Lungisa, to challenge him at the league's conference next year.
It was unclear whether Malema would attend today's disciplinary hearing. Efforts to reach him yesterday were unsuccessful as his cellphone was switched off.
However, Derek Hanekom, who will chair the disciplinary process, insisted: "The hearing is scheduled to take place (today), as I have consistently said, and I don't have any further comment."
