Android 2.X upgrades for Hero

I've been running Android 2.1 on my Hero for months now.

It's called custom ROMs, of which I've easily flashed over 30 in the lifetime of my phone. Better performance (I'm currently running my phone at 710MHz, the ROM has been optomized, etc.), better features (like Tethering), and of course a lot more customization.

Check out forum.xda-developers.com, and if you're planning on going this root, check out the Villian ROMs, they're pretty much as good as it gets.

I just installed 2.1 official (European), works okay.
Bluetooth works like a charm.
Custom roms based on the official 2.1 are still better IMO.
:)

Middle of the week and no word of official update. Tried calling Leaf but got "there is currently no one available to take your call" on the voicemail. Sux!

Semi thread hijack:
OK, flashed 2.2
I'm sure I will run into bugs, but all I can say is WOW!
(This version does not have sense, which is fine by me).

EDIT: Benchmarks show a 68% speed increase. (Linpack, no overclocking)

Email from HTC MEA Region

So this is the reply I received today from HTC in response to a query I entered on their MEA region website about the Hero upgrade on 8 July. (I entered the same query on the Leaf website, but have had no reply).

"Dear .........,

Dear ..........., Thank you for contacting us, Regarding the Hero upgrade, kindly be informed that currently the upgrade of HTC Hero is not available for South Africa. We are working on the android 2.1 Éclair. Because Eclair is a significantly enhanced release, it will require some time to update Sense for this new version of the Android OS. Please be patient while we work to provide you with a tightly integrated experience Thank you once again for your continued patronage. As for the Android 2.2 upgrade for the HTC desire and the HTC legend, kindly be informed that any information that do not come from the HTC website are only considered as rumors or speculation, however, kindly be informed that we are considering an upgrade for some models of our phones to FROYO, but we are still analyzing the impact this will have on the user experience. We will announce a full list of phones and dates once we are closer to launching the upgrades. Please note as well that we are working closely with Google and our other partners to ensure we have the earliest access to everything we need to provide a complete and solid Sense experience on FROYO. We expect to release all updates in the second half of this year but can't be more specific yet. Mark Bennett HTC Please note that you can contact us via support line. For further details, please go to http://www.htc.com/europe/CA_Hotline.aspx, you'll find a toll free number that you can dial only from a landline. Best Regards, HTC Team http://www.htc.com

I'm slowly being forced into rooting and flashing a custom ROM. i just don't have the time for it yet.

Many of the new apps and also updates of existing apps will only work on Android 1.6 and higher. And those of us who are waiting for the official update are stuck on 1.5.

Quick question...what was your benchmark score before you put on 2.2? Mine on my Desire was 7(out of the box), now it's 37-39ish(Froyo)...Keen to know, 'cos my boss has a hero.

I went from 2.2 to 3.7
The current kernel for the rom I used is buggy. When they fix it, it should be closer to 5.6.

EDIT: Apparently it should be closer to 4.9-5.2

The delay for the 2.1 release, got me thinking, what is it that I really want out of 2.1 and will rooting offer me more.
For me its primarily bluetooth and brightness fixes, what is it for you?
