Android 5.0 Lollipop launched

We want plenty screenshots in the screenshot thread

I don't know how easy it will be to get my hands on the new image. The moment it gets released, everyone jumps onto the servers to download. I hope my download will be queued well enough to get the image. Maybe it gets pushed to my device... dunno, but I want it installed over the weekend.

I know it may sound as if I don't like Android. I actually do. I think from 4, Google have a good product. Hardware vendors like Samsung manage to cock it up though. That's not Google's fault. But it drive some people to Apple and Windows.

I'm looking forward to Android 5. I'm not really that thrilled about Android L. I'm still struggling to understand the point of Android L :)

Just kidding about the alphabet :)

Android L was given as a preview to developers to get their apps ready for the official release. Google saw where the 3rd party devs are heading with customization (open source) and allowed for integration before the release. Things like Xposed didn't run on ART. This gave these kind of devs the opportunity to alter their apps to suit because 5.0 is developed with ART in mind

If after reading OGrote's post about the changes in L, you still can't see what the point is, then it's best you stick to your iPhone.

Why... is the topic and the article out of sync. Lollipop isn't LAUNCHED... It's Launch WINDOW was announced.

New Android Lollipop developer preview and SDK now out

Google has now outed updated Android 5.0 Lollipop preview images for both the Nexus 5 and the 2013 Nexus 7. The new developer preview is based on build LPX13D.

The original developer preview for what was then only known as Android L was announced back in June. The images were updated once in the meantime, in August, when they received support for Google Fit. And now we're at the third iteration of these images, and almost certainly the last - since Android 5.0 Lollipop is due to become available as a software update for the Nexus 5 and Nexus 7 in the coming weeks.

Right now it's not clear what's new in the just-published images, but hopefully they'll show an Android 5.0 release that's almost finished. That said, they don't represent the final bits of Lollipop, and they're bound to still have some bugs. Hence, if you're not a developer, you should probably stay away from them, and wait for the official software to start rolling out.

Speaking of developers, they will be happy to know that the Android 5.0 SDK is now out too. This allows developers to start working on getting their apps ready for the new OS version. Lollipop comes with 5,000 new APIs. The new SDK follows the preview release from this summer.
