Hi guys

Can anybody advise, on whether one could use any type of gaming controller on an android box?

Would it just be plug and play, or would there have to be some form of configuration or app that one would have to install.

I plugged in a controller, and could go through the normal menus, but once in a game, it does nothing.

Any advice would be appreciated

You can technically use any controller if you root the device and put the drivers on but in general you cannot.

Usually those designed for android or things like the PS3 controller work.
If you root device you should be able to get any decent xinput controller working if you know what you are doing but natively supported ones are just so much less effort.
There are apps on the store which try detect controllers and make them work but in general if it doesn't just work, then it isn't worth the effort.

Yeah or a controller designed for android, there are many that exist. (Quite cheap as well).

Just be careful as the cheap fake xbox or ps controllers don't always work.
Then make sure that your setup box supports wireless controllers or that it has OTG USB. (on the go).
It really is far more complicated than it should be.

I'm looking for a good controller to use with my android tv box.

What was your outcome @Icemanbrfc ?

Remember that some games support controllers and some dont. Some that dont can be "mapped" for controllers if you are rooted.

HID controllers should work "plug and play" Xbox 360 wired should be fine and should let you control the tv box even. I read that for my box (minix neo u1) the wireless xbox 360 also works but only with the original Xbox wifi receiver.

Ps3 Works but you need to root and use an app called sixaxis.

Ps4 connects to my phone using bluetooth, havent tried one on the box yet.

Then theres the controllers that you can get from Aliexpress/Dx/etc.

IPEGA seems to be the most popular brand at the moment and priced reasonably (around $20 -$30). I'm currently trying to decide on one, just watching the net for reviews.

Theres also Moga, which is highly rated by most but expensive ($40 and up)

I'm playing android games on my box but also emulating PSP and NES games. I'm using a cheap controller that i bought from the local electronic store (soundtech) https://i.ytimg.com/vi/VGhh7raIVyE/maxresdefault.jpg but the analog sticks have deadzones that make it not very precise. So i'm keen to get a new, better quality one.

Keen to hear what way you went.

cheers

I saw a samsung controller at a vodacom shop once. It had a bracker for the phone. You could look into that maybe it works for any android and not just samsung phones.
