Unfortunately, I have to say Apple wins for me. We have android auto/apple carplay in the Tiguan, tried 4 different android phones, just didnt wanna connect. it would establish a connection then keep failing. Apple works every time. And Im an android owner. Luckily its the wife's car and she has apple.

Waze now compatible with Android Auto app

Waze finally gets an Android Auto version that works on the standalone app. The Android Auto app lets anyone with an Android phone use a hands-free optimized interface for basic communication and music controls when mounted to a dashboard.

Previously, the app was only compatible with head units equipped for Android Auto. But about a couple of weeks or so ago, according to Android Police, an update to Waze added support for the app.

When you go into the Android Auto car dash mode, you should see Waze as a second option for navigation. Let us know if you’d rather use Waze than Google Maps.

Waze begins private beta testing of CarPlay iOS 12 update

iOS 12 is launching on Monday. One of the most anticipated features from our readers is support for third party navigation apps in CarPlay. If you don’t like Apple Maps, iOS 12 enables third party apps to offer navigation interfaces in the car.

Waze has now rolled out a new update with iOS 12 CarPlay integration to its private beta program. Unfortunately it doesn’t seem like this update will be available next week.

The update is rolling out to beta testers now, and it doesn’t seem like it is close to shipping just yet.

On Twitter, Waze has promised CarPlay rollout within a few weeks. Although they haven’t formally announced this, it looks like they are targeting an October launch.

Google Maps has stayed quiet on promising any dates for CarPlay support, beyond appearing on the slide at WWDC alongside Waze. Offline maps app Sygic has teased screenshots of what their CarPlay experience will look like, but we hear they have been held up repeatedly by App Review.

The new CarPlay APIs let apps draw their own map tiles, overlaid with CarPlay-standard interface controls. It’s a good compromise of flexibility for the developer and consistency for users, forcing the apps to behave similarly to other apps in the CarPlay experience. Unfortunately, we don’t have screenshots to share of the Waze beta at the moment.

iOS 12 launches this Monday, and runs on any iPhone that can run iOS 11. The App Store will soon be flooded with apps touting integrations with Siri Shortcuts, CarPlay and other iOS 12 features like grouped notifications.

My Waze update should land in the next few hours.

Have to drive out on Sunday so will comment then.

Not really supposed to but who cares.

It will be nice if TomTom makes their app CarPlay compatible.

They've got until December when I get my Mokka back.

What is your current daily in the meantime?
Sharing a spark with the missus. I'm repairing my old Captiva which should be back on the road mid week. I'd have done it sooner but we weren't anticipating such a delay.

I miss my CarPlay car.

Google Maps beta adds iOS 12 CarPlay support, here’s what it looks like

Earlier today, we reported that Waze has started beta testing CarPlay integration. Now, someone has posted screenshots of the Google Maps app in beta, which features CarPlay integration (a new feature available in iOS 12).

iOS 12 third-party navigation apps use a base layer that is rendered by the app, overlaid with standard CarPlay controls. You can see how that works in the screenshots below.

As shown in these screenshots, the Google Maps app icon takes the navigation slot on the sidebar, which until iOS 12 could only be occupied by the Apple Maps app.

The arrowhead and map tiles are rendered by Google, using Google branding and the visual design language. Obviously, the underlying data source is also Google’s. You can see the map in both cartography and satellite modes. There’s a D-Pad control to pan the map manually and a microphone button to conduct a voice search.

The app uses CarPlay standard toolbar controls to add destinations or access a settings screen. The settings screen is a full-screen pane that again features familiar grid layout of actions, like toggles to avoid highways and tolls. Add destination includes actions for recent searches, significant places like home and work, and POIs like gas stations.

Unfortunately, access to the Google Maps beta is relatively locked down. The roadmap for the public launch of these features is yet to be announced. Users will need to upgrade their devices to iOS 12, which supports all the same devices that can run iOS 11. Then, we must wait for the third-party maps apps to release updates to the App Store which integrate with the new CarPlay APIs.

Given Apple featured Google Maps on the WWDC keynote slide, we would expect it to come out fairly soon — although it’s unlikely to be there on day one.
