I am looking at buying an Android phone (MB 525), I was wondering what are the data needs of a regular Android device. I will be using the following:
  1. WhatsApp
  2. 2 e-mail accounts
  3. Lightweight browsing (iol, news24, mybb etc)

I have wifi at work and home, but work wifi is heavily restricted (no gmail, whatsapp), so while at work those will need to go through 3g.

Any idea what I should be budgeting for, for wifi / 3g data?

300 mb. Personally I use 600, Coz I do a lot of browsing and done downloading in 3g.

If you avoid app updates/downloads, 300 is enough. Suggest you get a top up do that you can use your airtime to
buy data

I bought a 75mb data bundle, still has run out after a month exactly.

I have two email accounts, browse, use the GPS, whatsapp, email a lot of crap... but I do try use wifi when I can.

I would say 300mb but as of the 19th data bundles change the 300 is being done away with as far as i know, but anyway 300mb was 139 and its now 159 for 500mb. Personally i would say take at least 300, its a safe over amount. Chances are you wont use more i use about 50mb -100mb a month but i have wifi at work and at home.

Also you say thats all you will be doing, but trust me once you get the phone thats far from it, at least when your not at work that is.

Guessing around 100MB.

I am on the Red bull mobile 200 deal, it gives me 500MB so I use all of it.

(btw you can get the MB 525 with 100 sms'es 200Min and 500MB data for R250 p/m on the RBM deal)

Not what I wanted to hear (I am cheap, I am under no illusions).

More like what I wanted to hear, almost a straight swap between the R60 BIS fee I pay now and a data bundle.

Now all I have to do is wait for Motorola Defy / MB 525 prices to come down and I am set.

Use WiFi Hotspots and Home WiFi and there's just about no data, maybe a little here or there but with just a bit of discipline the WiFi should cover most data needs.

I use 500mb a month. Might even get 8ta 1GIG for R149.

I use 500MB / 30 = 16.66 MB per day on a 30 day month.
Another thing you can do is download 3G watch dog and see how much you use on your first month.

I only use about 100mb a month, but I am around wifi for most of my day.

I currently buy a 2.3GB for my X10, as i also use it as my HSPA modem with my Galaxy Tab10.1.

For your useage you should be fine with 300-500mb, i would take 500mb just to be safe, especialy if you may find yourself wanting to download podcasts etc... on the fly and letting apps auto update when they want.

I have a similar profile to yours and typically use less than 100mb.
I've bought a 75mb package (MTN) for R49 p/m and typically fork out another R20 tops for extra data. That's R69 in all. I'm happy.

Tip - Call Meter 3G on Android is a fantastic app for call, sms and data monitoring. You can setup your package details and it will work out the bill for you... and it's free!!!

I currently have a 24gig CellC data sim in my galaxy s and I have no problems whatsoever where data is concerned. Note that I'm a HEAVY downloader and am CONSTANTLY updating all my apps. I don't have a wifi network at hand, so I don't depend on that to alleviate any of my data needs.
I've also been known to use my phone as a modem for my laptop and do a few windows and antivirus updates aswell as a bit of WoW. (Though when I do this I have to load more data some time towards the end of the month. However, at R50 for 500mb this is hardly an issue.)

As a result I'd say 500mb would be more than enough for your needs.
