Android >>> iOS

Yeah, if you're used to 10 days then charging daily will take getting used to - I don't find it an issue - basically put it on charge when I go to bed but when travelling it's a pain to have to carry the charger with me

No issue with this - see if you can get them to demo it at the Apple Store - it's pretty loud (increases in volume you longer you leave it)

It unlocks when you look at the phone - then you swipe to get to your apps

Screencasting is of course perfect with Apple TV - that said, none of us here at home have any problems screencasting to LG TV so that may be an artefact of the TV you're casting to

This!!!!! So much this - it's why my wife is sticking to her iPhone 7+ even though it's quite old by now - she just can't let go of the fingerprint reader. Tbh, I only miss it very occasionally since I have an Apple Watch and that interacts with the phone to allow unlocking even with a mask on.

Personally, I'd be very hesitant to run an iPhone in a hybrid ecosystem (watch, earbuds) - when those three items are all Apple they interoperate like a dream - the whole is genuinely greater than the sum of the parts

Could be the 10 year old reliable, but then again Im Casting through the Chromecast dongle so should matter one bit or byte.

Probably the right decision imo - integrating all those non-Apple devices with your phone is going to leave you feeling frustrated and you'll end up hating the iPhone for reasons that have nothing to do with the phone.

My own journey from Android to Apple was slow one - first I got the phone, then the other bits and pieces followed (fortunately, at the time I switched, Android watches, buds, media devices, etc were so kuk anyway that I hardly owned any so it wasn't a great loss).

I'll give you an example of how seamless all the Apple stuff is - Airpods in ear, listening to music on phone, pick up iPad, start YouTube video, sound automatically switches to Airpods; phone rings, answer call on watch 'cos phone is on desk 'over there', sound switches back to Airpods Youtube video pauses; walk into bedroom, switch on ATV which pops up a notification that Airpods are near - click button on ATV remote and they connect and I'm now listening to ATV on Airpods - it just 'works'

But ja, it's not going to be doing that with your current stuff you already own so you're going to have a suboptimal experience all round.
You forgot the Find My integration with Air Pods

Ja née

I find that my older (6+ years) devices (roku and ATV 3 in the spare room I'm looking at you) don't work so lekker anymore especially with newer devices.

I've recently moved house, but until a month ago I was downloading UK shows from BBC/ITV to my iPad Air 4 and then trying to stream to the Samsung Q60T TV. It might have been the VDSL which was supposedly 20Mbps or the TV, but I found AirPlay frustrating as hell and very inconsistent. So much so I'd stream to the built in Chromecast on the LIT box instead and watch it that way.

Now I've got 500/250 fibre and don't need to download before watching anymore as I watch the UK channels live, so I'm not sure if the issue was the slow internet or the TV, but just thought I'd share for the purpose of balance.

I know with Android, some place carry single SIM, others have dual, and some carriers have different bloatware .

An iPhone is an iPhone ?
Doesn't matter where you buy or what SIM you use, or don't use ?
And only 1 year warranty ?

It can be network locked, but I haven’t seen that with Telkom’s stock.

more Sad people hate Android with all its options and Choose to limit themselves to idiotphone, but as you were.
Im never going to buy one, even after using it for a period of time.

No one gives a **** what you do mate. Carry on with your shitposting. If you're happy with Android, fine. If it works for your needs great. That however doesn't mean iOS is bad for everyone. Go play outside or something...

Yeah, 1 year warranty (optional add on warranty called AppleCare - got it with my first phone haven't bothered since)

In the USA you do get a non- GSM iPhone that won't work here.

AFAIK no iPhones in SA are network locked (only some of the cheap Androids)

Correct. It's not really a thing here. In the UK most iPhones (and other phones, for that matter) are network locked. You can have it unlocked if you pay the operator some Pounds.

An iPhone is an iPhone, in the sense that OS and hardware is made by the same company. Network operators cannot load their own version of the OS or any bloatware.

You're free to remove most apps off the phone (Yes, even Apple's own apps) from the device too if you like.

As for sims, use any compatible sim you like; they are not network locked.

Off-topic - this debate with Android vs iOS is just as bad as the debate between Android developers and us iOS developers.

Yeah, we had a court / Dept of Communication ruling in SA a couple of years back that did away with network lockin

Point of order:

Devs charge for their apps... Apple provide a marketplace and take a commission.

Correct, we set the price of the app, Apple takes their 15% (or 30% if you're making $1 mill a year from the store)

There's no law in SA prohibiting network locking. The networks voluntarily agreed not to do it, but they're not legally obligated, which is why it's making a resurgence.

I didn't know that.

I just remember ICASA putting pressure on Vodacom and MTN.

So they did it voluntarily hey!

Telling that it's only evident on the cheapies that they import in bulk and rebrand as a Vodacom / MTN device.

Edit : they were indeed threatened.

It would have been better had they been legally required to do it but ICASA took the easy way out... shocker. :o

Yeah, watch out for the network lock as mentioned, and if you buy from some countries such as UAE then the FaceTime might be disabled. But I bought a 6s from Oman and most recently a dual nano sim 11 from Myanmar and they worked great.

Another brilliant feature unique to iPhone is that while travelling, if you use a local sim for data, you can use that data as your VoWiFi connection and call home for free using your local minutes you have bundled on your normal South Africa sim.

And nowadays with worldwide data eSims such as Truphone (thanks @Dave ) commonplace, if you go overseas with your Vodacom sim or whatever, load data onto that Truphone eSim and you have not only internet when travelling but no roaming charges for calling home.

Apple Watch - I'm still rocking a Series 3 as my daily watch - so not sure what you mean by the battery not lasting - I'm wishing this thing would die so I can justify upgrading :p

Find my phone 'screams' at me - never had a problem hearing it
LOL! I am exactly the same, I got the Series 3 Apple Watch in 2019 and I cannot believe they are still pushing more updates to this thing, so I simply cannot justify upgrading.

I get the feeling they are going to leave it on WatchOS 8 if not 9 when that arrives.
