The new iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus are here and with them comes iOS 8, which is also available on older devices dating back to the iPhone 4S and iPad 2. Meanwhile, Google is gearing up to release Android L, the biggest overhaul of its mobile operating system since Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) was launched almost three years ago. With iOS 8 having just been released, and with Android L have a developer build, now's a good time to see how the two stack up, and what their differences say about the ambitions of the companies behind them.

Found the article quite interesting.

I did not put this here to cause another which is better debate, more for the sake of clarity :)

There's a lot of convergence happening in the OS features.

Yea I noticed this as well.
Seems (and likely a bias opinion) that in most cases IOS is playing catchup.

Must say that Metal looks stunning though

which OS? apple is tying there user base even more in with their new features...

and all the article is saying that.... 'this is what apple is doing... android's been having it already'

didn't really give me a real feeling about either or... almost just saying... there they are, without telling us much about either... lack of comparative screenshots is sad.

It's definitely playing catchup in adding a lot of the features Android users have had for ages - especially in opening the OS up for more customisation and app intercommunication. In other areas (and far more under the hood stuff that users wouldn't notice as much) I think it's doing some things that Android isn't close to - like Swift (Go language is a sidenote in programming), Metal API, Apple Pay, Healthkit etc. But it's quite clear that Apple are only recently becoming comfortable with the idea of making the operating system open in some of the same ways that Android was from the beginning.

Pity many Android users will be left behind once more by the OEM's. Pretty sure my P6 wont be getting this. Only reason I have KitKat on my P6 now is because Huawei came to our offices for a mini expo for the staff and the hottest cutest little Huawei guy offered to load it for me. Wont be so lucky with L I am sure :-(

What didn't you get his number?

I did actually. It is at the office. I told him about the GPS issue on the P6, where sometimes the GPS just wont switch on anymore and then I have to do a factory reset to get it working again. He said KitKat should sort that out, but if not I must call him and he gave me his cell.

So tell him you will buy him lunch if he updates it for you :)

Be careful with that version of KitKat that he installed for you. He might have left a backdoor open! :)

Hmm, Looks like ART might be the gamechanger.

I see that the S5 is currently losing the benchmark war to the iphone 6 and it is a much lower spec'ed, although I know the A8 in the iphones has a different architecture which might make it a bit faster.

ART seems to be atleast twice as fast as Dalvik. I currently have ART enabled on an S3 but I still do notice some lag, but it is noticably better. Now waiting for the new nexus to see how L will perform on it.

.

Iphones are also 64bit since the 5S wheras Android only supports 32bit at the moment. Would that not make a difference? Or is that what you mean by architecture?

Android as an OS only supports 64 bit from the L release. Android's whole architecture is proprietary and that makes it difficult to simply compare hardware specs.

Yes that is part of what I mean with architecture.

As Faniedry said, with L Android is also going to go in the 64 bit game. But at this stage I would guess there isn't that much difference because of the 64bit processing. Remember when PCs switched over to 64bit, wasn't really that much faster then as far as I can recall. But there are a lot of positives in the long run to switch over.

It's a pity not all android users will see L unless they upgrade to the flashier newer phone. How many users are still on Jellybean? There are still some phones on Gingerbread as well :-(.
