Android malware warning

Symantec warns about an increase in malware for the Android platform, such as malicious applications masquerading as legitimate applications

This was always going to happen on an open platform.

Market, web store, Appbrain and trusted website reviews. Those are my initial security measures. Also look at permissions that the app requires.

BS permissions, I don't deal with.

Also user reviews are important and don't just read the first four.

I can already see the comments from anti-Android people about the security issues on Android bla-bla-bla...

What this says to me is that the ability to sideload apps exists, but it 1) is generally not recommended, and 2) should be used with caution.

It's a good feature of Android to be able to see what permissions the app you're installing is using. People should look more carefully before clicking "install".
