Not that I need one, but I'm thinking of buying an Android Mini PC. I'm travelling to the UK soon, so I thought I might get it shipped to the UK from China using eBay, and then take it home.

Does anyone on these forums have one? Do you use it? Do you have an air/fly mouse?

Obviously I expect terrible quality, I think what excites me is that there are small homebrew communities surrounding these things, so I might be able to put a custom version of Android on it. I see that the MK802 was the most popular for a while, and so there is a lot of custom firmware support, but the UG802 and MK808 are the new, much more powerful kids on the block.

I bought a UG802 from in4dealz, based on recommendations from several blogs and youtube vids, still waiting for mine, it's been shipped, but SAPO is worse than useless.

I already have the rooting, and custom roms lined up.

There is a youtube uploader, from RSA by the accent, that uploaded a review or two, I'll see if I can find the link.

Yeah I saw his video, I think his name is Reno Botes. He has a bidorbuy.co.za account from which he sells them.

I can see on one forum that a group of people have access to source code that they believe is for the RK3066 chipset. If they can make it work, then custom kernel development will be possible, which will mean a lot more custom roms could be possible. Also CM9 and CM10 should be possible.

It is a little tempting to wait for the next Rockchip CPU, which will be manufactured on a 28nm process.

True!

They are dirt cheap.

Funnily enough a UG802 or Mk808 will be much faster than my own Android phone, and running a far more recent version of the OS. I have an LG Optimus 2X stuck on 2.3.7 thanks to LG and Nvidia.

Reno Botes is Onerb on these forums. Check his threads out.

Personally I think that you will be a lot happier in the long run with a mini ITX AMD Hudson motherboard which sells for roughly the same price as a decent android media player. There appear to be some mini ITX thin client cases which might be suitable for ~R350 (Wootware, Ikonicit etc.) - just make sure beforehand!

I would also consider one of the Amlogic AML8726 based media players (Geniatech, Pivos, Sumvision etc.) as there are several versions of XBMC which now support the graphics hardware. The Sumvision Cyclone Nano which appears to be identical to the Pivos XIOS DS is available from Amazon UK as well as many other retailers in the UK. There are also other players with a faster version of this processor (8726-M3) such as the G-Box Midnight or the Oval Elephant M3 but they only support the Android version of XBMC and not the faster Linux version from what I remember.

We've sold many of them - no complaints so far
I use one to stream to my second tv from my microserver

Which one do you plan on getting?

Already running CM9 on my MK802.

How does Plex look on these?

Runs very well. Primary reason I got one.

Got stutter in my movies because I have two many Wi-Fi devices around me which is why I needed to get ethernet working, but the USB/Ethernet adaptors I got won't work.
So it is in the cupboard until the firmware is updated to support my adaptor, or I can find an adaptor that works.

I got an ACRyan Veolo from Esquire which does the same thing except it comes with a wireless keyboard/remote and has ethernet built in. Works very well.

Mike, did you manage to get the usb - rj45 to work?

I sent a sample to mybb to test and do a review on. If you want to pick it up from them and test you are welcome. Should the adapter work well on the UG802 I can sell you a new one or you can import one directly.

As far as I know the UG802 works right out the box with usb-rj45 units.

Let me know.
