Hi gents,

I have just received my Tetrax magnet for my car and now I am looking for the best GPS navigation system for Android. I have Google Maps and Sygic at the moment.

I have tried MapFactor free, but could not navigate to a street address, only street intersection.

Any recommended application with good support and perhaps even traffic status/updates? Free will be great, but I will not mind buying something if it is really worth it.

Kind regards,
Roobs

Sygic Southern Africa works great and has live traffic monitoring... Utilises same info as Tom-Tom does in South Africa, although it is an additional annual subscription.

I gave tried most and Sygic seems to me to be the best.

If I remember correctly, Sygic's UI is quite slow and not so well designed. It was frustrating to use for me, coming from Google Maps.

I'm really satisfied with Google Maps.

Edit: looking at the pictures in the Play Store, Sygic's UI might have improved since I last had it installed. Not sure though.

OP, have you tried Waze?

I have tried installing it. The UI wasnt the same as Google Maps and Sygic, a bit more distant. I believe I didnt set it up properly.

Also, it crashed on me a few times so I gave up.

Thanks for the feedback, I see Sygic is on special for 25 euros. Do you think it is worth it? I am currently on te 7 day trial.

Will check it while driving tomorrow and to work daily. Does it also give traffic updates?

Edit: I see now you have mentioned it does have live traffic. Is it accurate?

I assume there is a reason you are looking to find an alternative to Google Maps. What is that reason?

No real reason, I have used Google Maps when I had to quickly travel somewhere from work and didn't have my GPS with me.

I was just wondering if something better was available with regards to map updates and live traffic.

Yes, it's best to use the 7 day trial and be sure.

It has traffic updates and they are accurate. As I have mentioned, it is an additional annual subscription. It uses the same information as Tom Tom GPS users do.

One if the main benefits of using Sygic is that it uses the maps offline, no data being used and not dependent on mobile signal strength. Although traffic updates does require and use very little data.

Try using this code for 30% off.

CODE: 6298910740762

Not sure if it will work.

I managed to get a code for 70% off when I bought a while back.
Google search.

Ah, Ok. The fact that Google Maps uses online maps means that you're always using the latest version of the maps. They're pretty up to date in my experience. The live traffic also works well from what I've seen. In indicates congestion and accidents, and have the ability to figure out a faster route if necessary.

Data consumption is minimal, so I don't even bother to download maps beforehand.

I was in Cape Town last week, and tried using Google maps. I couldn't see where I was on the map - the road I was on was coloured red, and my position was a tiny red dot...same colour as the road. I couldn't find a setting to make my position more visible....either a bigger dot, or a different colour to the road. I was completely lost. Google maps is great if you are sitting at home planning a route....but if you are in the car trying to drive and navigate at the same time....meh

So....I switched back to my faithful Waze app. Love the voice directions, and the auto zoom when you slow down...and of course the user input so you can get updates on road conditions etc etc

By the way, I have never had Waze ever crash on me. I guess it depends what hardware you are using and if you have enough RAM memory. I use an iPad mini, or my Samsung Note 3

Street Pilot and Tom Tom running perfectly on my droid, don't need data at all.
