Android software installation

So I've downloaded some s/ware for my Magic, copied it to my SD card under Download Folder, file(s) have .apk extensions. Tried opening files with ANDExplorer but get message "Unable to open file"

I've found that some downloaded apks from forums are corrupted. Also I use OI Filemanager from openintents.org. What apps do you want? Maybe I have them

We'll get the proper Android Market soon, so then we won't have to go through this anymore...
