Hi people. I'm in the market for a 65inch TV, on a budget of R15 000 and below.
My question is, which is better, Android or Smart TV.
And which make is good that will fall into my budget.

My Sinotech is a smart android tv.
but the firmware on tv is stuck on kitkat 4 something, no new firmware
this now sux when i try and put latest apps on tv
Smart tv IMO is not worth the effort.
Stand Alone Android Box waaay better

I don't think that any of them will be "good"at that price-point. You will have to settle for average at best.

That said, i have read that SkyWorth is a good buy for entry-priced TVs

You Reckon? I think its so much better having a Smart TV, the area looks neater without the Android Box, and it's one less thing to turn off/on.

@Sadaka - I'd rather go for a new Samsung TV that supports DSTV Now, Netflix etc etc.

Ah yes, i should of noted when choosing an Android tv rather go stand alone as not many smart tvs can handle the latest android OS. Such a pity that the manufacturers of smart tvs dont have a strong IT backbone for the operating systems going forward

If you want a tv with Android you need to make sure it states "Android TV" and not "Android 4.4 etc".
Currently the only TV's on the market with "Android TV" are TV's from Skyworth and Sinotec.

Alternative you can get an "Android TV" Box like Xiaomi Mi Box S , Telkom Lit box and Skyworth binge (No Netflix) and get any TV you fancy.

Samsung and LG TV's in that price range are really good and support Netflix and DSTV.
65NU7100 is R15k 4k, HDR10

Hi all. Thank you for all responses. Would the Skyworth TV be a good investment them? Who makes it. Anyone know?

The Sinotec don't have Android TV, refer to Chucky's post on them. The Skyworth might though. For R15000 you could get an entry level Hisense Smart TV though I'd add R1000 for this one

The pre-2018 models all had normal Android, they switched over to "Android TV" in 2018, only a handful sinotecs still run on normal Android.

The Hisense would be good buy.
Aaah if the new ones did then cool, the mentioned Sammy would also work the 65NU7100.

I actually totally disagree with this.

I've got access to and use quite a few different streaming boxes/Android TVs for testing / playing - but nothing gets close to the simplicity of a Smart TV. I don't mean Smart as being Android either ... the Samsungs run Tizen. In fact, seeing Android would put me off (and I'm an Android fan)

The earlier ones (probably pre 2016) weren't that fantastic - but since then they're fast and responsive, and do everything you need (DSTV, Showmax, Netflix, Plex, Amazon etc)

Can a smart TV sideload?

In 95% of cases, a Smart TV is the better choice. Believe it or not, piracy is on the decline and legal streaming is the source of most entertainment nowadays.

They make these for the majority of the market. If you're one of minority, then you'll need get the box. They can't cater for everyone

Cool, I have never seen a Tizen telly, heard they are better than Android

Why not have both. Legal streaming still doesn't give you 100% access to everything that is currently relevant.

A manufacturer isn't going to build something that gives you the ability to pirate - so that won't happen. Like I said, they make something for 95% of the market ... but you, there's Android TV / sideloading etc

Because its illegal not because its what the customer wants. They'd do it if they could.

I know many people still using their browsers to live stream from pirate sites, and are looking to get Android boxes.
