I hate replacing things before they break or wear out and my requirements are modest, so I use my hardware long after it has become obsolete. Until last week I had and used a Samsung Galaxy S3 Mini with Android 4.1.2. I was forced to replace it because it got to a point where the flash memory wore out and after every write cycle it had less RAM available. Now I've got a Samsung Galaxy A03 Core with Android 11 (patch level 1 July 2022).
Much to my dismay, I'm missing a lot of functionality and productivity in Android 11 that came standard on Android 4. For example:
Regarding the individual ringtones, I've followed all instructions that I can find online (Contacts -> Select contact -> (i) ->Edit -> scroll down -> view more -> expand everything) but the option just isn't there. I've tried to assign every possible permission to the Contacts and phone apps to the point where I've probably created a major privacy and security hole, but nothing works; there's no option listed to assign individual ringtones.
And who thought it was a good idea to completely separate the phone and contacts apps? In my old phone I had a "contact" button in the phone app (where you want it) but now I must either run the phone app to punch in a phone number or run the contacts app to call a saved number. How clumsy is that?
Yes, I could probably get around most of the above by finding, downloading and installing third party apps (and either pay for them or live with tons of advertising) but these are basic features that came standard with my old phone and Android 4. Why are they missing from my new phone with Android 11? If anything the newer version has less functionality and offers less productivity than the old version!
What am I missing here?

Much to my dismay, I'm missing a lot of functionality and productivity in Android 11 that came standard on Android 4. For example:
- There seems to be no simple app to make notes on the phone (something I use frequently);
- I can't seem to block phone numbers starting with +2787 or 087;
- I can't seem to block SMSes containing a certain string;
- There are two "messages" apps (one Samsung, one Android, apparently with exactly the same functionality) but neither will show the number of unread SMSes on the desktop (unlike the Facebook and Whatsapp icons, or the messages app on my old phone);
- The "do not disturb" function no longer can be scheduled to allow only white-listed numbers after hours;
- I cannot assign individual ringtones to contacts (see below);
- There's no media player app (I can play an MP3 file by tapping it in the file manager though).
