Android Useful Apps

I was thinking that its quite hard to get South African content sometimes in our apps. For example when reading the news we don't always only want to hear about what is happening in Afghanistan, or how how some sweet Granny in the UK has gone to the shop that we get from NY Times, BBC, CNN, etc. Flipboard, News Republic are all amazing ways to read the news, but the content isn't from a local perspective. Which is why we all have News24 on our phones.

Anyway, so i'm trying to see what I can find that is out there and in the News space I was pleasantly surprised. I found quite a few new News Apps out there and I've tried to review them on my blog.
Basically the list is: (the link will take you to the play store)
News24
BDLive
eNCA
and EWN

While I still love News24 for it's news that is so up to date, I find the interface often frustrating. My favourite and my conclusion was that the EWN (Eye Witness News) app was the best. Simply because I could continue browsing stories right from where I left off.

If anyone else has any great South Afircan content apps I would love to know! hmmm..... maybe I should start a new thread about this :)

I don't have News24. What's wrong with Google Newsstand?

Come to think of it, I get my news from Twitter. There's a discussion worth having...

Never saw the local stuff on it as I never slid over to "News". Just saw all the Forbes etc. under highlights and closed it again. Having a good look now and it has quite a few sources for news. Sometimes the format is not great though, for example The Citizen loads a normal webpage. Most of them are quite good though. I think I'll add it to my review.

Hmm this seems like a red herring to me. I have no interest in specific news outlets apps or "curated" news apps for that matter.
Use a RSS reader like Feedly and add the feeds from sites that offer what you are after.

Basic VPN provider, not really useful to the masses anyway, the free package comes with 500mb I think it was.
Can move your internet location to UK or USA.

Used to be used for changing your Play store location so that SA users can get the books and movies, but no longer works.

You would of switched over before play made a change, in the past a VPN was enough, now if you want to move you need a Card for said country and make a purchase with it while having an IP for said country.
The advantage tot hat route is you never need to use said card again, and no mater what your IP is your account is permanently moved to the int store.

Its what I use, but the card has to belong to said country, my virtual card is a UK card, so It needs to be attached in google wallet to a UK address and I need to make 1 purchase using it while on a UK IP address.

Cool, well im actually just using it to change my dns for netflix on my phone. Dont need to buy anything really. Still have not a dns tool to change while on a 3g connection, so tunnelbear helps with that.

Romtoolbox will do that for you, you can specify a DNS per network type, so WiFi or 3G, there was another tool I used that let you set the DNS per SSID as well

Not sure, some of Romtoolboxes features do, but my phones remain unrooted for all of 5 minutes.
DNS settings are a user features so I see no reason it should require root.

Ah okay. Not to comfortable with rooting my 5 day old phone:p

In my hands that would of been a 5 day old paperweight, half my phone will not work without it.
A lot of what I use on a daily basis that is essential for me requires root. Not to mention the power and flexibility it gives you. I believe the phones first question on first boot should be "Do you want super powers? (aka root)"

Well what out of the box does your phone not support? Besides cranking up the clock rate and removing bloatware.
