Android Useful Apps

Cranialblaze, how do you set Tasker to switch on pc's (ie when entering a wifi area)? Wow. That's impressive

It can't do it on its own, you need to partner it with RemoteLauncher, the dev made it tasker compatible so you launch the RL profile from tasker and it send the WoL Magic Packet and turns the PC on.

Its a bit of a set up, the RL, especially if you have never used WoL before so you welcome to PM me if you want to give it a bash.

If you watch memory on an Android phone you doing it wrong.

The OS will cull apps as it needs it, besides if its preloaded it opens up faster.

That is why Task killers are so wrong as they check/remove apps from memory and not based on CPU use %

I understand the gist of Android memory management, but I'm just weird about what gets to run permanently on my phone. FB used to get on my nerves because I hardly use it but definitely want it, but now Greenify puts it to sleep when not in use.

Work Profiles I use all the time, changes audio settings and turns my work pc, work server, colleagues pc's and bosses pc on and signs me out of gtalk when I connect to the wifi which happens about 60 - 90 seconds before I actually sit down at my desk.
The general profile which sets it all to my normal settings when I am not at work.
Home profile which turns on my home pc when I get home.
GPS Automation
Headphone settings that adjust the output volume to be more suitable for having things stuck in your ears.
Metting profile which silences the phone when a calendar event is reach where I have set it as busy.
THe host file update for using certain apps on my phone for my local network.

Sleep task
Data off when connected to wifi
Exercise task that opens my workout app and puts the phone into DND.
Teather task setup for working with the tablet which has no sim.

Most of these I use every single day, and for me to get to work every morning, turn down my volume and change it to a more suitable ringtone and msg alert, turn on my pc, sign out of gtalk. While it may only save a few seconds, its just a las to do it manually. ALso the server is in another room and we don't need it running 24/7. All the androids are set to auto turn that one on, whomever arrives first is the one who does it, it just needs to be on when we working.

Rest are all miniscule timesavers, but the tasks are so repetitive it seems silly to do them manually 5 days a week and asl Alpha said, with android memory means very little.
WIth windows more free ram means more speed, with linux more free ram means less optimized and everything is just damn slower. Unix works best at lower free ram levels as its smart enough to cache and suspend apps that are not actively needed and unload them if needed.

The only thing you actually need to care about is CPU usage, apps that abuse that are the problem, but I have had about 100mb free ram on my last 2 phones and my current tablet, it matters little how much they start with, they all end up around the same level.

That's cool. You actually make good use of what it can do. My level of computing is only slightly above the average end user. My phone is as streamlined as I need it on CM 10.1 with a few apps like HD Widgets and ROM Toolbox Pro.

... turns my work pc, work server, colleagues pc's and bosses pc on ...

That's pretty cool. Too bad my laptop connects to the network via WiFi (no WOL).

Quick Llama question, can I use it to transfer files from a folder on the SD card to a shared folder on the network when it becomes available automatically?
No.

I use My Sync Center for just this.

It syncs to My work/home PC with my phone the moment I get into Wifi range.

I did not like that one because of the required windows app, SyncMe is purely droid driven, no special software required, just needs windows or samba shares, secured/unsecured.
Can schedule it to time and/or SSID

Thats the cool thing about Android, its all about choices.

On my side again I did not like SyncME as I had to set up different shares all over the place.

This does exactly what I am after, thanks

I never had to go creating shares I just used the existing ones I had for my network.

Thanks a lot, that's so cool of you..!

But right now, it seems a little above my vuurmaakplek, so I won't waste your time :p

How was that effort, took not even 2min to find it after I posted that. Comparing that to the retarded S-Calendar is like comparing oranges and planets.
CHanging a theme colour vs fixing a functional problem are 2 extremely different things.

Functional problem? Clicking on a dropdown menu? That's all it takes to get s-planner to link to g-calendar...

Tell that to my s-planner, I defaulted to my calendar the day I got a sammy, 6 months later it had synced didly squat, only noticed that becuz I put a docs appointment in on my pc and it never synced down.

ES File Explorer can browse shared files on a network.

Works great but only allows me access to one of my shared files yet I've shared a few. Gives some login permission denied error. Does anyone else experience this?

Thanks

Thats because of your operating system, the folders needs to have the correct permissions defined. You will likely find you have the sam eproblem accessing those same folders from other computers as well

My ES File Explorer accesses shared files just fine. I have to use the search function for it to work.
