Android Useful Apps

Are there any other good backup apps that don't need root?

Well you can use apps to back up different segments, but no real overall back-up without root as they need access to sqlite db/files that normal API's don't cover.

This might work for you? Super Backup : SMS & Contacts. It will cover most of it, but as I said above it will not cover everything like say app specific data. No backing up your angry birds progress without root ;)

Contacts, sms's, photo's, videos, etc

Contacts - use Google or the backup facility in your contacts app
Photo's, videos, etc - use Airdroid, OTG, wifi, etc to copy to alternate location
SMS - use SMS Backup and Restore

The problem is that you don't have a one-stop backing up app. In order to do that, it is best to get rooted and do it all at once and once a week/month copy the backup folder to your external hard drive/computer/whatever

Rooting is not "bad" as some would lead you believe. There is plenty info out there (XDA preferably) to get it done safely.

Yes. I use MyBackup Pro, which can function without root. It's very good and has an easy to use interface. Without root you can't backup app data. Just root your device man.

I think I've asked this before but what happens if I've rooted and need to send my phone in for repairs?
Do I need to "unroot" first? Can they tell I rooted? Will it void any warranties? What's the reason someone wouldn't root?

If they full of crap they can charge you for repairs in theory but I never seen it in practice.

I know people that got phones repaired and even replaced while rooted. If you can unroot before sending it in it would negate this problem well except if root was the cause of the failure: Example you install a CPU overclocker and cause the CPU to die.

I personally use Gmail but got a friend who uses talkomsa, so wanted to suggest something other than the default Android email client.

I wasn't aware of that. I thought it could handle multiple email accounts. Oh well...

Been using K9 for ages. Works very well and it has plenty settings allowing you to customize it to your liking. I run all my accounts, including GMail through it.

Best mail app imo
