Yeh it's very plain, I have to honest. No real functionality at all.

Google seems to have gone the simple route. Now is awesome yet so basic it almost sucks.

I'm using Textra. Serves my needs and can block.

You can block specific numbers on the new app like you can on hangouts. It's basically the SMS part of hangouts on it's own, as far as I can tell

It's easy to miss because it's not a very advanced blocking feature but if you open an sms and then go to the menu -> People & Options there is an option to block the number
