Android Useful Apps

How can having an external sd card mess with performance, especially if it's just used for storage of media like videos etc?

sd cards are slow during read and write operations... that is all. it will feel that phone is lagging, instead it will be because of storage.

The real explanation is quite complicated. There was an AMA on Reddit a while ago with some guy claiming to be high up in the Android development team, and some of the things he said stood out to me. The first was that Google absolutely despises what some manufacturers are doing to their software and that there is a lot of conflict going on behind the scenes with them. Google is responsible for the scaling back of third party bloatware in the last year or so. The second was that Android users aren't using their phones as intended when it comes to multitasking, and to try help Google removed the 'kill all' button in the task switcher. He said all you're doing when you constantly close background apps is freeing up RAM for no reason, causing apps to reopen slowly and reducing battery life with more CPU usage. Google wants you to just use your apps and let the system juggle the memory. The third thing was that external memory is the devil. The reasons were very technical and his explanation was filled with jargon, but the clear point was that Google hates external memory more than they hate third party bloatware.

That's if you use it for app storage yes, data storage will have no overall impact. Its just when storing applications on it you will have performance issues with those specific apps.

The pricey class 10 high speed sd cards can mitigate performance issues, but the ones shipped in the boxes are usually class 4,the 2nd slowest available.

Lol. I've moved a few large apps to my SD card because I only have 16gig internal memory and can't update apps due to small space available.
I haven't noticed any significant performance decrease.
Whatsapp is 1 of those apps.
1. Are you rooted?
2. Do you have a Samsung device?

So for data storage fine but with apps install on sd not? Or is it just the fact of having an sd card inserted duff up everything?

32gb class 10 sandisk microsd on ebay R150 these days, genuine and free ship.

Having an SD card is fine, not sure if its true but I personally found the performance of the SD card itself to be best when it was only half or less full, after that it always seemed to be slower.
The only logical reason to run apps on your SD card (and remember, its not actually running its data is split between the device and the SD), is when your main storage is either really low or full. Which if its 16g or higher, you really need to re-evaluate the immense amount of crap you have installed.

Yes plenty of scam sellers on ebay, if you don't know what you are doing you will get burnt....

I have bought a few Sandisk flash drives, Sd cards etc from the seller, all genuine in original packaging, full capacity and speed. Absolutely no doubt in my mind they are genuine.

Just ordered 2 more micro Sd 32gb class 10 45mb/s Transcend at R146 a pop. The sandisk class 10 at the same price are 30mbs so I went with transcend this time, wait just checked now the sandisks are R135 now. The sellers I've used are courtesytrading and sinceritytrading. They normally come shipped in a very small padded envelope so often arrive without duties payable.

The 64gb of either of the variations I've mentioned above are around R280, all incl free shipping.

What do you usually pay on duties for the memory cards?

Only Vat, which is 15.4% when applied to imports. From my experience tiny items in envelopes like flash memory often appear to come through without being inspected and therefore no duties payable.

The main draw back is you have to exercise patience, the Post office is back up to speed these days with imports but that still means a good 3-6 week wait for your goodies. I'm fine with that, a chance to exercise delayed gratification.

Yes, I'm rooted and have a custom (Omega) rom.
I have a Galaxy S4 and a class 10 Samsung Evo 32gb SD card.
Not sure if it's a problem with custom roms, but older versions of Samsung stock put a boatload of rubbish in /data/log. I once had problems with updating apps and clearing that directory gave me back 1.8GB and allowed me to update again.

Anyone know of a free start up manager? Manage autostarts was a bit glitchy but it worked, now it's gone "pro" :(
