How does it 'double' your plan if you're downloading a lot? Is it redirecting through a 3rd party server?

Compression on device with a proxy server that decompress the data.

Kind of the same way BB does it, just without the VPN.

Just be aware that it can't compress streaming data, or SSL connections. Other than that, it's "saved" me ~40MB, and Onavo shows I've used 157MB. Not a huge saving, but I've been streaming radio quite a bit.

Its live dude. I am synced on my PC already. Not sure if I will give up DropBox yet though.

I loaded Drive on my laptop because Dropbox is firewalled in the office, and I must say I'm very impressed with it. Stuck it on my S2 as well and now synch nicely at work where before I couldn't. The offline feature is also very nice and a real winner for me with my travelling through Africa a lot. Travel docs, certified passport etc all at hand without having to worry about data connection.

I'm changing over from Dropbox as my premier storage account I reckon. 5gb is nice too.

I can testify to that, works extremely well. ICS only, although I had to unistall it, not often u will hear tgis but it was saving me too much. Got a topup315 and and downgrading my package in august cuz I use too little airtime, so basically saving data just means I need to find otherways to get rid of the airtime.

Will reinstall after I finish my downgrade and start buying data bundles again.

100%

The best app buy I ever made for my phone!

Is there some easy tasks to schedule with tasker? The app seems like a complicated learning curve and I don't yet have the time to spend on it! Or an easy tutorial somewhere...I should.probably check youtube...

The wiki has some cool profiles: http://tasker.wikidot.com/profile-index

So does lifehacker, and other related sites. Just do a quick google.

And you right, it does have a rather steep learning curve. I learn something new everyday and by no means am I using it to its maximum capability...

That's a problem I wish I had... :erm:

I can have all these tasks done automatically without having to press any buttons... with a free app.. llama, as previously mentioned.

How does it impact connection/download speeds?

How does it impact connection/download speeds?

Well never ran any speed tests or benchmarks, never noticed any performance problems, considering its a VPN and performs compression its likely that even with a higher latency the smaller file sizes may actually result in faster data transfer.

I know RIM servers use compression and because of that EDGE had an effective transfer speed that equaled and even at times exceeded that of uncompressed 3G data.

This is actually something out Providers should look into as a service for the clients, as the most likely result would be improved performance with the data being compressed by up to 80%. This would be the ideal solution to make the unlimited data a feasible business model. If they setup a dedicated apn that provides compression then any user downloading 1GB is effectively only costing them 200mb.

We ran some tests, comparing a Galaxy S II with Onavo (MTN), and Apple iPhone 4S with, and one without Onavo (both on Vodacom). The Galaxy won the browsing match, although there is something to be said for the MTN vs Vodacom signal here :D. However, there was definitely a difference between the iPhones - the uncompressed iPhone would show first, then the Onavo-enabled iPhone would catch up quickly. Not enough to notice if they weren't side-by-side. Of course, the Chrome browser renders in a different fashion, and was displaying (with Onavo enabled) just before the uncompressed iPhone.

That's a win for Onavo, and a win for Android (in this case, possibly a win for MTN :p)

Nice, well ultimately IMO a slight loss in speed and performance is more than made up for in cost savings.
I remember a user her on myBB that used roughly 6GB per month on he's tablet, he's job required him to be on the move so wifi was not a real option.
Using onavo would substantially reduce the companies cost of data, if you like me and use less than 50mb of actual data then its not that useful of an app, but for those using the GB's per month I would consider it almost essential.

Cool! I'm gonna have a look at this...

I ran Llama for a bit - it seemed to mess with the connections, slowing things down - is that the case for you?

not at all... just ensure you disable rules that you dont need or did not stipulate. then refine your rules.
