Android Useful Apps

Hi everyone.

I am looking for a similar app to Apple iPad's NoteTakerHD, to use with my Note 2. You know, where you have a area to write with the stylus at the bottom of the screen that automatically or easily scrolls on whilst you write, but the actual writing is small at the top of the document...don't know if that's a good explanation... :p

I know this app well. I quite like Notability more thought. :P

For android. Try this: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.steadfastinnovation.android.projectpapyrus&hl=en

Not sure about the zoomed writing but I've heard good things about it.

For those who like their SPen gestures, I will highly recommend

https://play.google.com/store/apps/...251bGwsMSwxLDEsImNvbS5nbWQuc3BlbmNvbnRyb2wiXQ..

Requires root, but allows you to create as many gestures you want to do as much as you want and een replace the default sammy ones.
I have basically replaced the double tap with papyrus so it launches that instead of the little snote windows.

Sounds so interesting - do you find it really quicker and/or more useful than simply doing whatever it is what you need the old fashioned way? What actions do you regularly execute with your gestures?

QUite useful when on the lock screen to just quickly open certain apps, replacing the defaults is useful.
Default swipe action for switching apps, kinda like on the iphone/ipad, swipe left and rite to toggle between next and previous apps.

Mostly for me its replacing the toggle for that silly little note app with something better, I make use of that shortcut a lot and not a fan of SNote

Thanks for mentioning papyrus, way less lag than s-note or jotter on the N1. Wouldn't mind being able to quickly activate it without rooting though :(

Whats wrong with root, I would not be able to use my phone without it.

Being a long time unix/linux user/developer, I don't like giving anything su access to my systems. I'm also trying to see how far I can go with the manufacturer's vanilla OS. Up to now, I've had absolutely no reason to go another route.

Makes sense, I have a few apps that I need that use root, so not much choice here, I pretty much root out of the box.

Unrooted phones are for plebs, or do you also use your Windows PC without Power user/Administrator access ?
I can understand if its a company phone just like a company PC, but when its your own why let someone else dictate what your apps can do?

Just to help you deside here are some apps to help you change your mind:
  • Undelete: Restore deleted files
  • Call Master: Block spam calls/sms silently (Some prefer Root call blocker)
  • avast! Mobile Security: Anti theft thats hidden and even phone home the 1st chance it gets
  • SD Maid: Remove dead files (Clean up after uninstalled apps)
  • Droidwall: Block apps from accesing the internet (Avast also have firewall section and I use that instead)
  • SD-Booster: Speed up sd card speed by increasing cache size
  • Super Download Lite: if speed is the need this app allow you to download on both 3G + wifi simultaneously
  • StickMount: Mounts/manage USB removable storage for you
  • CacheMate: Clears multiple selected app cache in one go.
  • LCDDensity: Change your phone's resolution
  • Samba: Share your phone's files on a windows network
  • Set DNS: Change your Phone's DNS to something you prefer (Personally I prefer OpenDNS to the crap Cell C provide)
  • ADB wireless: Use Android SDK via WiFi
  • Titanium Backup: Back up everything and I do mean everything
  • SystemApp Remover: Get rid of Pre installed Bloat (Some other apps like Titanium can also do this but not as informative)
  • Screencast: take movies and screen captures of your phone
None Market Apps (May need to Google for them)
  • MarketEnabler: No more false borders when apps not available in your country
  • LEDs Hack : change LED functions
  • Market Autoupdate Bulk Toggle: One click activate/de-activate Google play auto updates
  • Anti: Network security testing software
  • Facesniff: http cookie sidejack
  • GameGaurdian: Hack games editing coins, scores or whatever (great for freemium content)

I am sure there are loads more. Like AndroidPolice 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6

As for root access manager which app do you prefer ?
SuperSU
or Superuser

Thats the thing I think you missing, you are prompted for every app like Unix for SU access, its not a one the phone is rooted all apps can do as the please.

nice list, some of them I use, i see you missing Rom Toolbox which has a number of features which you listed separate apps for. Very NB one you forgot it ad free or ab block plus.

Love Call Master and TB, SD Maid is good, generally don't worry about the dns.

Crap, how could I forget adblock! Guess that shows how good the app is that I forgot that most apps come with ads :)

As for Rom toolbox, 1st time I ever hear of it (Yeah don't laugh) will have to check it out.

Only thing i find AdFree does not work on is the IMDB app, Ad Block Plus does, but its still a bit iffy, after a few hours it would actually just block my internet all together.
RT is pretty handy, has a ROM Manager if you want to go the custom route, root browser, scrtpts, terminal emulator, autostart manager, App2SD, CPU Control, Kernal tweaks, build.prop editor, memory manager, task manager, sd booster, font installer, boot animation changer, theme manager (for custom roms).

Also noticed your StickMount, not sure if I tried that one, but I use [root]NTFS Mounter, was the only one I found that worked with NTFS drives.

Well reason for that is cause I know Chainfire from XDA, and prefer most of his apps (Esp seeing that I know where to bug him if I find problems) more than anything else
Using his DSLR Controller, and SuperSU apps as well.

NO idea why I still have NTFS Mounter installed, I never plug in any NTFS drives, even have a host cable lying next to me. It works, but have never actually needed it.

Not much in your list that strikes me between the eyes that my phone won't work without, so I'll stay a pleb.

For your 2nd q, I don't have a windows pc, and the windows I use in a vbox (for scanner and inkjet printer), I certainly don't use it as administrator - I don't even allow it Internet access.

Well in that case its even better. You know when Linux prompts you before an app is allowed to install in /usr/bin or so on, well this is exactly like that.

Pretty cool, I'm gonna need to get my S3 rooted as well.

I really love the fact that you can data sync to dropbox directly. Great way to make backups of a phone. Hate losing my progress on some games.
