Android's eSIM conversion feature gets closer to launch

Yea it was a genuine question.

When I took a trip with a dual SIM phone, I landed abroad … walked to the kiosk … bought a pre-paid SIM … and was up & running 5 minutes later to call my Bolt

I thought with an eSIM it may be more cumbersome to get the details of the MNO & require a store visit rather than the little kiosks. In other words, I thought it may be more of a hassle to get setup and running.

But it seems with the app quoted, there’s no need to even chat to anyone or play with settings, provided the MNO is supported

Well, my mates had no hassles, and on returning, wished it was better supported here.

Why would they prefer it better supported here though? Are there benefits over using a standard SIM, assuming the phone isn’t lost or stolen?

I put a physical SIM in once when I get the phone and that’s it. I haven’t once thought about converting to eSIM

Prepaid eSIM for a watch would be great. Then I can get a cellular Apple Watch and still keep connected. It's also the only way to get dual sim on iPhone.

Same. Though my thought is that I would rather use a physical sim for my home network and if and when I travel get one of those international esims' which is affordable and can be used in multiple countries. Though I do also suppose phones support multiple esim so can have one for home network and another when traveling. /Shrug

Ah.

Ok I wouldn’t use eSIM on a watch.

And as @Ockie says, it would be cool for abroad - but I’m not wishing or missing it at home *shrug*

Just out of curiosity....does esim use more or less power than a physical sim? I personally don't get the fuss about esim...unless one travels alot and want to get easy access to those international Sims that you can sign up for online.

I prefer a device with two physical sim slots and esim functionality is OK. But there should be two slots. This way when I land in another country I can just go to a local convenience store and buy a prepaid sim with lots of free data and use that. Or roam in SA on my foreign number. It's more flexible.

It's easy to buy sim cards in Europe, just show them your ID card and you're all good to go.

In terms of the end user there is no difference other than being able to install 8 eSIMs and switching the two active lines whenever you see fit. Extreme example…

In terms of the manufacturers, it makes a whole lot of sense because they save space by going eSIM only.
